Guest guest
We're working with Dr. Goldberg in California to treat a suspected ongoing viral problem in my son. He started taking Valtrex in December, had all the typical -- and some not so typical -- die-off signs for three weeks so it looked like we were hitting something. He also had a major leap in fine motor skills -- writing much neater, boost in hand strength, etc. -- and some periods of amazingly complex thinking and conversations. However, he also became more hyper and very defiant, ugly (thought we were entering the nasty teen stage early). He switched to Famvir in early Feb and the bad symptoms went away followed by some really good progress in complex thinking, sudden ability to retell stories he'd read or heard and more fine motor improvements. He also suddenly wanted to write full-page reports for the first time (previously half-page stories and reports were very difficult for him). He's had a difficult two weeks lately though I think this is due to an ongoing fever/upper respitory illness. He does seem to be bouncing back now. Dr. Goldberg leaves kids with yeast problems on antifungals long-term and just checks liver function regularly. It has seemed to help many of the kids he sees. Curt has taken antifungals in the past but we only saw improvements on one round. Gaylen

Guest guest
Could anyone share their experience in using antivirals or antifungals for their children? We have done a lot of research but would like a real parent's opinion. We are looking at Acyclovir as an antiviral. On a different note, we did Diflucan as an anti-yeast/antifungal over a year ago and saw good results then and we believe he has another yeast overgrowth. My son was much calmer after the Diflucan-anyone else see that reaction or any other reaction-positive or negative? Thanks, Theresa Madore
Guest guest
Thanks Gaylen, Does Dr. Goldberg do any training for physicians? Are there any other people that you know of that are willing to train interested doctors? We are seeing a new doctor that is going to get training from Dr. McCandless - 2 day workshop- and I am hoping I can get him to Bradstreet/Kartzinel. Any other thoughts on other antivirals would be great from anyone else that has experience-we were looking specifically at Acyclovir. Guest guest
Theresa, Could you tell us more about the 2-day workshop with Dr. Candles? Where is it and when? Also, I am interested in the anti-virals. Would you share the information you receive? Guest guest
Dr. Goldberg has talked about training other doctors in his NIDS protocol but to my knowledge this has only happened with two other doctors -- one in NY and another overseas. He doesn't offer seminars for training but would require doctors to train with him in his office. After working with him for awhile, I've seen he really individualized treatment so it would be hard for him to teach in a seminar-type format. When choosing a doc to handle Curt's viral problems, we debated between Dr. McCandless and Dr. Goldberg. We chose Dr. G because we felt he had more experience with viruses and had been working with them longer though I think Dr. McCandless would be a very good choice especially since she blends so many different treatments. From the limited contact I've had with her, she would probably be more pleasant to work with especially if you've done a variety of biomedical treatments. Dr. Goldberg's staff can be very difficult and he can be difficult to work with at times but he does really seem to have a good grasp of what's going on when there's viral involvement and how to treat it. As I understand Acyclovir, it is weaker than Valtrex and Famvir but I think used by many docs for younger kids. Lauricidin, a monolaurin supplement, can also be very helpful for viruses.
