What are people THINKING these days? Have we lost all respect for others? I wonder how they'd feel if THEY had a flat head and someone said that to THEM. I will never forget that comment - and now I will always worry that even though the band will help his head - his poor little ears will always stick out. It is amazing how rude people are. I have had several people say, " oh my gosh - look at those ears! " It is truly sad that people do not have more respect for others. I didn't handle those comments well, and now I am worried about how to handle all the questions and stares from people. When I feel or see someone staring at , I want to go over to them and just go ahead and explain it to them, so they'll know and can stop wondering. It IS amazing what comes out of some people's mouths these days. Don't you want to go tell their mothers when they say stuff like that?!?!?!?!? My son has a folded ear on his tort side from birth. The ear does not look like his other ear. When I feed him his last bottle at night I hold that little ear. I think it is looking better and better. I did mention that to the ENT specialist I saw when he was only a few months old. I thought he said that they could. Guest guest Posted November 13, 2000 Report Share Posted November 13, 2000 Act as though you are perfectly comfortable with the helmet (whether or not you are feeling particularly confident or not) and just answer questions matter of factly. Unfortunately, people in our society do not grow up exposed to differences, so they gawk and stare and make rude comments. If we want people to change, we need to help them know enough to act better. If they say something about his ears, you can just say, " Aren't they cute? " " They sure help him hear well. " or some other response that you feel comfortable with. If people think that it is not a big deal, it will normalize the experience for them. As his head rounds out and hair grows in, the ears may not be so noticeable. In the rare event that they are way out of proportion and you are not comfortable with them, you could always consider cosmetic surgery later on IF it is something that he is sensitive to. Many babies look funny when they are little because their heads may not yet have grown into their ears. Most adults look pretty normal, so the odds are that he'll balance out. Ever time we hold to put him to sleep, I make sure his little ears are laid flat in hopes that it might help! I was told there is a small chance the helmet will help his ears. If not, and it bothers him as he gets older, I guess we will look into getting them fixed. But until then, I always make sure when he is laying down or whatever, that his little ears are flat! We all are struggling with the same issues - I too am first time Mom and feel so guilty for not knowing how much I needed to be repositioning Cade. So upset with the pediatrician - who kept saying " not to worry " . He is 8 months and am worried that this might not help him that much.
