I think ALL NHS Drs are very wary of any tests done outside of NHS as they don't really know how to interpret them and can only prescribe on info they understand.Are you seeing him on NHS or at his private clinic?

We live near Sheffield and saw Mike (NHS) when Charlie was very young.  He does listen to parents and is complimentary of parents dong their own research and taking control especially if you can demonstrate positive effect from what you are doing.  He did recomend pro- biotics for Charlie but the dose he recommended was totally inappropriate.

He is quite supportive of diet intervention for gut issues especially milk elimination.  He was the one who originally recommended I eliminate milk from Charlies diet (and mine as breastfeeding) and also to not introduce gluten until 18 months old - he believes reflux is always because of a reason.

I also found him quite good at referring on.  He may arrange for tests to be done on NHS such as repeat stool culture - unfortunately the same things have never been picked up for us when the NHS have run them even though they know what is been suggested.

He prescribed nystatin for Charlie but you actually see the thrush in his mouth.  He works quite closely with Dr Shackley who is an allergy/immunology consultant and she's really nice but in general they just don't 'get autism'.

I would go prepared with a list of concerns as he is very good at keeping you to time allocated even if he is walking you out of door whilst you are still asking questions.Mike Thomson is also the medical advisor on the living with reflux forum - they think he's the bees knees.

I have due to see Dr Thomson in Sheffield this week for our sons, eldest ASD and younger who fails to thrive and with some food intolerance and diarrhea issue.

I naively thought that for my eldest ASD, the doctor might be able to prescribe antifungal and antibacterial course if I show him our CDSA test. I was told this will not happen.

Any parents that has seen him or other gastroentrologist, and could feedback would be very useful. Don't want to waste money and unnecesary travel if possible.

Any advice is appreciated!

Hi Alison

Thanks for replying me so quickly, I am going to see him privately as the NHS

waiting list (even to see a paediatrician) is too long. However I am not sure

how tired he will be as he only sees us after 5.30pm (which is out of NHS

hours).

I will prepare a list like you say, and then hope he is open to what we say and

offer some advice. Do you think they do 'pill cam'? I am going to mention as

possible mean of investigation if possible

Hi carol

I found dr Thomson very helpful with regards to assisting me in getting a nhs

referral after doing a private appt.and assisting us in what protocol to do

with the gut, as my son still has hypotonia we still have some gut issues if i

slip and dont do petroleum jelly,he also suggested that movicol was too intense

to give on a daily basis to just give mag. citrate which i get from

mandimart.... i think if you dont talk about biomed as a whole but just focus

on the gut he is willing to listen but any mention of what i call the word

general biomed and he will freeze... after andrews scape goat issue with the gmc

, drs like dr thomson need to be careful as they also would not like to lose

their jobs. But a nice list of symptpoms and sugested gut biomed he seems not

opposed to. I liked him and would reccommend him to any parent with similar
