Guest guest
Hello, I sat down this morning with my friend who is the superintendent of a school district. I wanted to make an informed decision before deciding if I want my son to have a 504 or an IEP. I have read a lot of discussion lately regarding this subject. My son currently has a 504 and is tutored at home through the school district. My friend told me that it is far better to have an IEP, as they carry much more weight legally. It does not vary state to state, because IEP's are covered by Federal law. If a child has a 504, and everything is going smoothly, it should be adequate. If, however, there are any problems, an IEP is the best plan to have. He mentioned my problems with our previous school district. He told me that they basically don't have to honor a 504, which could be why they weren't taking me seriously. Also, a serious illness can be considered a learning disability, regardless of the child's IQ. I have heard through this forum that an IEP is a lot of paperwork and a general pain for those who have to deal with that side of it. My thought is the real pain is what our children must go through on a consistent basis. The paperwork is nothing compared to that--I want to do what is best for my child.
