Guest guest
I first want to say I am not choosing one product over the other. I am not familiar with the DOCband. I know many of you have it and have had excellent results. I am thrilled for all of you! My daughter Jenna wore and had excellent correction with her STARband. It is what the Medical Director of the Cleft Palate/Craniofacial Clinic prescribed. He works at a highly reccommended Childrens hospital in the area. I know other members have children who have or are wearing STARbands. They are also receiving great correction according to their posts. I don't agree on totally downgrading a product or company that is and has helped many babies. The STARband has been the answer to Jenna's plagio. It isn't for others. Some people choose or are forced to choose (do to availability) local helmets, DOCbands, STArbands, etc. Don't get me wrong. I would be angry, upset, etc. If I had such a bad experience with a product. Especially since this is our children we are talking about. I would change orthotists too if they seemed unhelpful and unknowledgable. If they couldn't get their act together I would call the main company and talk to them also. I guess what I am rambling about is I don't think it is fair to put down the STARband. It as well as other bands has helped many babies. I am thrilled for everyone who are getting results weather it is local, DOCband or STARband. I am sorry for those of you who have had terrible experiences. I think it is unfortunate and unfair to you and your baby. But I also think it is unfair to put down a whole product that has helped so many. I am very lucky to have had a very experienced orthotist. I talked to her at length before casting and banding Jenna. Sorry I rambled but I felt like I needed to express my feelings as well. Guest guest
Hi Tonya: Kurt has a STARband that was cast by the scanner. He is doing great in it... down form 20 mm to under 10mm in about a month. You can check out his progress in the photos section. The important thing is that you find a qualified and experienced orthotist. Guest guest
Tonya, Max has been " Starscanned " . The device is amazing. It can tell you in black and white if there has been any growth or improvement. Also, it is quick and painless. It takes 2 seconds to scan the baby! Please let me know if you have any questions I can answer for you. Guest guest
Hi, We go to a place that has the scanner. It's been really great for us, I really like seeing the printouts of how much correction my daughter is getting and it's so nice not to have a cast made. Here it costs $3,000, but our insurance company got a discount and then our insurance paid 100% up to $1,000 and then we ended up paying about $1,000. It was so worth it. I think costs can vary depending on the place you go. Kat & Olivia-STARbanded 3/6/03 (hopeful to grad on 7/11!) TX > Hi, > > Has anyone out there used a Starband " cast " by their scanner? Guest guest
Tonya, has been " scanned " and although she doesn't enjoy the process particularly, it is the best way to measure the progress being made. It is relatively quick and painless. I think it would be difficult to compare the starband and DOC helmets as there would not be many out there who have used both brands. I can tell you that the starband is very sturdy (acts as a great protection for babies who are starting to climb!), comfortable I think, as has never seemed bothered by it, and cute too, cos you can pick your own design. Just my thoughts. Good luck to you, and with insurance too. Here in California it cost us $1900 for our helmet (no insurance coverage for us either). cheers JA > Hi, > > Has anyone out there used a Starband " cast " by their scanner? Guest guest
I'm going to jump up from my depressed because my kid outgrew his second band and needs a third funk and respond to this one... You (jaoxford) wrote that it would be difficult to compare the starband and doc because there aren't many out there who have used both... Debbie has used both as have I and I will GLADLY proclaim that yes, there is a difference! I'm going to post new pictures to tiernan's album tomorrow probably, but there is a difference. The starband, you know how you have to pull it fairly hard to get onto brooke's head? The docband just goes on so much easier, weighs about HALF as much, and instead of having that fishbowl shape is more contoured in a manner that is customized to the individual patient's head. The mods took a trip out to Cranial Technologie's facility a few months ago (eek, or was it more?) and CT is far more involved in overseeing the ultimate success, they don't just make the helmet and then send it to the ortho, who, just might not know what they're doing. THIS DOESN " T MEAN THAT THE STARBAND WON " T WORK, IT JUST MEANS THAT YOU NEED TO BE VERY VERY CAREFUL THAT THE INDIVIDUAL TREATING YOUR CHILD HAS LOTS OF EXPERIENCE WITH KIDS HEADS. The difference between CT and Orthomerica's involvement is that CT runs clinics and requires their Orthos to have ongoing education as well asto be continually proficient at what they're doing. They oversee the process from casting to graduation, whereas when tiernan had a starband, i merely had one VERY NICE individual from Orthomerica email me and offer to consult with my ortho over the phone... which, while it was nice, it really wasn't comforting to me. You just cannot see through the phone. It would really behoove you to follow your gut. Get appointments with orthos in your area and then also go to CT and have an evaluation there. See what you feel most confident in, and then do what you feel is best for your child. Just make sure the person you choose knows what they're doing and is actually skilled at it. This may be incoherent, I'm tired and my back is aching from picking up toys all day... geez, it's like as soon as they're in the toybox they're back out again. A mommy's job is never done. Ha! Guest guest
I just wanted to say that Jenna's STARband WASN'T That hard to get onto her head. Once her ortho showed me how to do it the correct way it was smooth sailing. I can't compare the Doc and STAr bands. But I just wanted to say Jenna's fit great and we had NO trouble putting it on her. Hers was very light. I have never seen the DOC band in person so I can't compare the weights. Good luck with Tiernan's second band! I'm happy he is having such big spurts! Guest guest
Just wanted to add for the record that we don't have any problems with Kurt's STARband. It is light (only 8oz.) and goes on very easily. I think it looks great and it is custom fit to his head. I have only seen DOCs in pictures, so I can't really compare. It is true that if you use a STARband that your ortho needs to be qualified, so as a parent you must make sure of that (since no overseeing by Orthoamerica). But in an experienced person's hands the band works wonders. And the star scanner is pretty awesome too! Guest guest
Thanks everyone for the input on Starband. The photos we've seen of CT's casting process look barbaric (sp?). I'm not interested in subjecting my child to that unless there is no other option. So if we have to do the helmet we are leaning toward the Starband, from the children's hospital in Atlanta. The people I've talked to, so far, in Atlanta seem very excited about what they are doing, while the CT person we met at the doctor's office seemed more interested in pushing their product. It also concerns me that a lot of CT kids need a second or third helmet I'll let you know what we decide. We are still looking for a second opinion. Thanks a bunch Tonya > Hi, > > We did not have the scanner but several people in the group have. They all seem to love it. I'm sure they will chime in. Guest guest
Tonya, Just to let you know my baby was casted 4 times and the last thing it was, was barbaric! I have to say that I really resent you saying that. No one here would subject their babies to something barbaric. The casting DOESN'T hurt our babies. They just don't like being held down. I've been a member of this group for over a year and you are the first person I have ever heard say that their CT person tried pushing their product on them. In fact I've only heard the exact opposite. Good luck making your decision, we all know how hard it is to make. We all want what is BEST for our babies. Ps.. make sure you interview your ortho before making your decision. > > Hi, > > > > We did not have the scanner but several people in the group have. > They all seem to love it. Guest guest
, I agree with you whole heartedly. We only want the very best for our little ones...that is why we are doing this in the first place. Noone enjoys going through this process but believe me our children are benefiting from it and I am thankful for that. My son Max is doing extremely well in his second DOCband and if we need a third we will go for it! We are nothing but impressed with CT and our clinician. Guest guest
Hi Tonya, It is hard making a decision when there are many options out there. I urge you though to do more research on the bands available and not make a decision based on a 10 minute process. It is truly over in a blink of an eye. It is not barbaric and my son was all smiles when it was over. I am presuming where you went had the Starscanner, but many Ortho's who use the StarBand do not. I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, which is obviously a large metropolitan area and the StarScanner is not available. All children who get a StarBand here are casted the same "barbaric" way as at CT. As far as CT pushing their products, that would surprise me greatly. I have been told by many that they will give you an honest opinion even if that means not getting a band. I am thrilled if you have an Ortho that is experienced with the StarBand, but just having the scanner does not make that so. That 10 minute experience will mean nothing if you get in the hands of an inexperienced Ortho. CT was the first to have FDA approval and they are the experts in this field. Many parents have had excellent correction with StarBands as well, but the product is only as good as its' ortho. CT requires all of their techs to have specialized training. Many Ortho's fitting bands have no specialized training with the bands at all. As far as needing a 2nd or 3rd band, that is totally dependent on the child's growth and that will be the case for whichever band you go with. You can only shave so much out of the band, plastic alone will not provide the holding points needed to see additional rounding. Sorry, for the novel, I just wanted to empathize with your plight and send you the hope that whatever you choose turns out to be the blessing you and your family are looking for. Good luck! Guest guest
Jen, Thanks for the " novel " . From what I've read so far the bands work equally well, provided that you've got a good Ortho. It's nice to hear that CT will advise against banding if it is not necessary. Maybe I caught the CT rep and the doctor on a bad day, but we are still uncomfortable with the banding decision. (I can explain further via e-mail if you want.) Okay, barbaric was a bad choice of words. But in all the photos I've seen the babies are screaming, and most of the stories I've read the they have screamed themselve to exhaustion. How about traumatic or necessary evil? Thanks, Tonya > > Hi, > > > > We did not have the scanner but several people in the group have. > They all seem to love it. I'm sure they will chime in. Guest guest
i am going to have to agree with Kathleen here... and we've actually had the opportunity to have both. Now whether it was because of the orthotist not having ample experience or not, I feel, personally, that the company ought to be involved with the patient's treatment the whole way rather than simply provide a product. I'm not trying to tick anyone off, I know lots of people on here have had positive starband experiences, but ours was definitely far from positive( if anything it was a waste of very precious correction time) and in comparison, I am much happier with the DOCband than I was or ever could have been with the STARband in the situation and time and place we were in. I can sit here today and PHYSICALLY COMPARE THE TWO BANDS, holding one in each hand, and I can tell you they are different. I can also tell you that the experiences with the ortho who did the starband and the people at ct are also completely different. what it came down to is... perhaps some people who are allowed to implement orthotic products shouldn't be able to provide certain treatments until they are specially trained, ESPECIALLY WHEN CHILDREN'S HEADS ARE INVOLVED. It's not just an arm or a leg (not discounting their importance or usefulness) my child's brain is in there!!!! I don't want someone who doesn't know exactly what they're doing to mess with my child's head, which contains his brain, both of which, if damaged, could alter the rest of his life. Yes, financially there is a difference, and yes, we will need a second docband. BUT it's worth it to know my kid's head is in good hands. Trust me on that one, I wouldn't drive six hours alone in the car with him if it wasn't worth it. When it comes down to decision time, I truly hope that you find a really excellent orthotist, whether they work for CT or not... but not all STARband orthos have the starscanner... and as for the castings, my kids' had two, and sure, he wasn't too happy about it, but a minute later he was just fine... i think i was more upset over it the first time than he was. ahh... the things we do for love... anyway, good luck with your decision and good luck getting that little noggin as round as you can get it! best wishes, stephanie tiernan's mommy starband dropout, docbanded 4.29.03, outgrew it, need band umber 3! charleston, sc --- In Plagiocephaly , " dtrapp2000 " <detrapp@c...> wrote: > , > > I agree with you whole heartedly. I have found that over the past 2+ years I've been hanging out, that the vast majority of DOC wearers are in one band, and the numbers are lower for those that go for #2 and #3. A lot depends on growth spurts, age and severity of the child. My son was deemed moderate, was in his band from approx. 5-8 months with about 90-95% improvement, all with one band. Just wanted to let you know that it can be done with one band too! 'mom
Guest guest
Tonya, My daughter was fine during the casting process, and I have heard of others who were as well. I would not consider this any more barbaric or traumatic than their monthly shots at the pediatrician (and the casting doesn't hurt!) She had a lollipop to lick at, and that really calmed her. It only lasted a few minutes, and I truly feel that is necessary to get a good fit on the band. You'll obviously need to trust your gut and do what you think is best. Just my 2 cents, but I haven't seen any negative comments from parents who have used CT. The negative comments on the starband are usually directed at an inexperienced orthotist, not the product or the casting process. Guest guest
It sometimes takes a little time at first to get right adjustment. We had a few problems at first but they were able to resolve them. had a huge growth spurt in the beginning and we probally went once a week the first month. If they have a star scanner they can scan your babies head to see if you have some correction. They are really great. I know I didnt reall see any thing at first but i'm really seeing some improvement now. I would call your ortho and tell her your concerns. Maybe she can get you in sooner. I'm sorry it's such a long drive. I drive about 2 hrs and I know it can be a chore with a baby. My son hates riding in his car seat. He's always trying to get out! I hope things get better for the both of you soon!!! and L Covington GA STARBAND Pope <apope@...> wrote: Does the facility have the scanner? If so has his head improved in the scans? Have you taken pictures every week or two to try to track progress? Sometimes it would seem that i wasn't seeing correction until i looked at prior photos. I am a bit surprised your ortho suggested you just take his helmet off and wait until your scheduled appointment. Jenna's ortho had us call when any issues came up and fit us right in. I realize you are 3 hours away but i would think the ortho would want to get you in as soon as you were able to travel. I just want to add that i respect everyone who is traveling so far for their baby's treatment!!! Where are you located? Maybe someone has used that location. Jenna's band was a little close to her eyes but not blocking her vision. This was to use her forehead as a holding point. Do you have any photos you can post? It is common for slight shifting after an adjustment but it shouldn't move a lot. Angie and Jenna(STAR grad) Starband My son (7 months)has been in his Starband for 2 months. When he first got it,he was able to wear it for a couple of days and evidentaly had a growth spurt and it became too tight and was breaking his skin down.Since we live 3 hrs. away ,we were told if it did this to take it off and wait until our next apptointment,(we go every 2 weeks) and the ortho. would take off some foam from inside. We did this same thing two more trips(broke down skin...more padding off.) Now it seems he took TOO much off, and now it goes close to his eyes or back on his head.I am curious if that is a normal part of this process or not.I am becoming discouraged, it seems as if there is no progress now. Please help me !For more plagio info
Guest guest
Thanks for all the replies.I am using an Ortho @ OU Medical center in Oklahoma City.He has added a small piece of foam to the piece that goes in front of his ear.It seems to have " snugged " things up and its fitting much better now.I posted some pics(), not sure if I did it right or not, apologies if I didn't.So glad to have someone to share this with!Everywhere I go I look @ babies heads and wonder why I never heard of(or noticed) this before! Thanks for listening. > Does the facility have the scanner? Guest guest
Yes we used him, but it was about three years ago. I joined this group in September of 2000. At that time he was still making his own locally made product. We absolutely loved him and he has TONS of experience. Any time you have concerns you can just get on the phone and he always takes time to talk with you. When I visited Cranial Tech last spring the folks there knew exactly who he was and spoke very highly of him! I hope you have a good experience with him too. Do you live in Oklahoma? Guest guest
Carla, My son has been banded for just a month now and his orthotist saw changes to his head at his appt this week. I could not see them myself until she compared his head to his pictures. Changes are probably happening without you noticing them. Good luck! > > Does the facility have the scanner?
