I think you are in Pakistan at the moment? I ask because obviously there's no

point in recommending brands of paint that aren't available there. I think

Tahira, avoid oil-base based paints as these are high in VOCs (volatile

compounds that are release into the air as paint dries) and stick to acrylic

based paints. I can only think of suggesting that the house is ventilated as

nuch as posssible and preferably go away with the children for a few days until

the painting is over and the paint is completely dry - and even then, keep on

ventilating the house as much as possible. And be sure the paint has no lead in

it - it's banned here but I don't know what the regulations are in Pakistan.

The worst paint I have ever come across is the old oil-based eggshell. It's an

excellent paint for durability but the fumes are appalling - I think it's now

bannned here and even before it was banned some painters refused to work with

it. You need a special respirator if in the area when it's being used.... I used

it many years ago and got a chest infection afterwards.

hi. My daughter started having seizures when we were having our house painted.

We ventalated it well, increased the number of applications of magnesium

sulphate cream and put peace lilies x 2 in her room. This sorted out the problem

for her.

I hope this helps and things get better soon.

Plants are an interesting idea to absorb some of the pollution - I found a list

of possible species on-line. I suppose you know to avoid commercial air

fresheners (always) - I hope you're not offended by my saying this.

I always use water based paint - dries quickly and does not smell.

comes in eggshell and satin wood.

The local hospital uses acrylic paints (water based). They have to use low smell

and quick drying paint as the hospital is always so busy and full of people.
