Guest guest
Hi Lorraine & welcome to our group: You may want to check out this link about brain development/restriction & the DOCband, I found it in our files section. http://www.healthgate.com/cgi-bin/q-format.cgi? f=G & d=fmb97 & m=1002055 & ui=99350182 Many, many studies have been done to be sure the DOCband and other cranial orthoses do NOT harm the child's brain. My daughter graduated from her band 1.5 yrs ago, she is nearly 3 yrs of age, and is perfectly normal and healthy. I've been w/the group 2 yrs already and have not yet heard of any negative side effects the helmets/bands. This is an excellent quesiton and causes us parents concern of course when we're cosidering these products. Good luck w/your decision. Is your child's plagio severe? Guest guest
Hi Debbie, First of all, this group is great. I have been learning a lot about plagiocephaly. Thanks for the quick response. I tried the link but I got " this page could not be found. " Any ideas on how to access it? As for my child, his case is mild. I'm still new to this so I can't regurgitate the exact technical jargon for you. We go next week to see a pediatric neurosurgeon, and if he feels that my baby needs treatment, then I go back to the Cranial Tech center. Hopefully, my insurance will cover it, and we can get started before my baby is six months old. Thanks! Guest guest
Lorraine- If you go to the links section on the site, it is the 6th or 7th one down. Just click on that and it will take you where you want to go! My son started his band young too, 5 months. We were thrilled with the progress! Is the neurosurgeon plagio friendly? You may want to consider trying to get the ball rolling with the preapproval now. That way you don't have to wait for them to approve or deny you before casting so no time is wasted. And if you decide not to band, not big deal! Dane's mom DOC Grad > > > Is any one worried that the DOC Band or other type of band or > > helmet > > > will negatively affect brain development? Guest guest
Hi Lorraine: That link I gave you was quite old, so it's possible that page isn't available any longer Have you looked on www.cranialtech.com ? I think they have several studies published on their webpage that might help. Otherwise, maybe Tim L of Cranial Tech can chime in here (Tim?). That's great you already know your ins. will cover hte band if needed! If Kai's case is mild & he's so young, he'd get fast & excellent correction! Good luck at next week's appt with the ped. neuro., please let us know how it goes. Have you been repositioning? If so, any improvement? Guest guest
Hi Debbie, Yes, I have looked at the studies on www.cranialtech.com but didn't see anything that directly referred to brain development. Thus, I'm still searching. Actually, I don't know if my insurance (Aetna HMO) will cover this yet. I have to get a letter of medical necessity from the doctor and then the Cranial Tech office will try to get preauthorization. I have my fingers crossed. I have been repositioning since Kai was three months old to no avail. That's why I'm looking into getting the DOC band. From what I've read, the company that makes the DOC Band is the most well- established one around. I'll let you know what happens after his visit with the doctor. Guest guest
Hi, Cranial Tech has done a study on this! It shows that the brain growth isn't restricted. Here is a link to the study: http://www.cranialtech.com/ParentsArea/researchArticles.html Cranial Growth Unrestricted During DOC Treatment of Plagiocephaly is the name of the article. You need adobe to view it, if you don't have adobe you can get it here: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html It's a free download.
