Guest guest
Medicaid pays for my daughters' pull-ups and depends, but they would not cover them until after she turned 3. She is 12 now. I guess they figure that if a child is not trained by 3, and Autism was always identified around the same age, they know it is due to the child's disability. For whatever reason, they only covered her pull-ups after age 3. Patty Re: Info. about PullUps/Diapers > We had to get a prescription from her peditrician and then take it >to a medical supply store. Why would medicaid pay for DIapers as every child has to wear them until they are potty trained and so the parents should have to pay for them wheather or not their child has a disablity. Guest guest
>>For whatever reason, they only covered her pull-ups after age 3. >> >>Patty I think it is the same in all state-agencies - they cover diapers only after a certain age. Here in California, the state will cover the costs after the age of 5. I think they might have lowered it to four, but can't recall for sure. In any case, their point is that if a child is not potty-trained by age ____, it is likely due to the disability which makes it outside the " norm " that other parents must endure - which makes it an exceptional case. I never took them up on it though. This is just what I was told. Grace

Guest guest
Aimee, With regards to below - " AMEN! " I have a 12 year old who is still in pullups and we would probably be bankrupt without help from Medicaid. We waited 8 years to get on our state's Autism waiver and it has saved us from living under an overpass. I don't buy diapers in Orange County, however, I buy them in Indiana and for a 12 year old it is EXTREMELY expensive to keep her in pullups. We have a prescription from her pediatrician that we turned in to Medicaid and must be renewed every year ( I guess that renewal is because she may get trained and they think we may then sell them on the black market - who knows ) I don't know of too many non disabled " normal " children age 12 who are not potty trained, so I feel that this is due to her disability and apparently the state agrees! They would not pay for them before age 4, but after that they consider it a consequence of her disability. I have received many " welfare queen " remarks since the day we began to accept the waiver services and medicaid as secondary insurance. I work - my husband works - we both pay taxes, but it never stops ignorant people from spouting ignorant remarks. The worst " welfare queen " remark was from our very own Department of Family and Children caseworker who was signing us up and accused me of " trying to get something for nothing " . Yes, I reported her and got a phone call from HER advising me to NEVER call Indianapolis on her again or I would be sorry! So much for anonimity! I don't have a clue what " Marj " was thinking when she typed what she did - hopefully, she did not mean it the way it comes off, but I was offended too when I saw it come across the list. Guest guest
I don't know how this works from state to state. Here in Indiana, we have a " waiver " program that " waives " the income limitations for qualifying for medicaid. The state considers the child's income only - not the parents. Of course, there must be a medical determimination etc., and there is a loooooonnnnggggg waiting list. We waited 8 years for our number to come up. It is considered an " optional " service coverage under our state medicaid program. I'm not sure how Kentucky works (I'm on the border of Indiana/Kentucky across from Louisville so I know a few people and they have some services, but I don't fully understand the " mechanics " of the program. Try checking with your state's Family Social Services Administration dept or the equivilent of it in Tennessee. It is usually the " welfare " dept. - Department of Family & Children, etc. I know SSI is not available for us either due to parental income limits. It is a murky area, I've always been told to " sign her up early " but we are never able to because of our income. There is a lot of confusion in Indiana about state and federal services. I know my daughter's pediatrician thought I was nuts when I asked him for a prescription for pullups - he had NEVER heard of them being covered. Now that he knows, he passes the info on to his other patients' families that may need it. So having said that, you may want to start out at the state offices. Hope that helps.
