Antihistamines were god send for those issues here – Ketotifen and varioius OTC ones (loratadine, cetirizine, ranitidine etc). Also propranolol. Hello everyone at ABE, i am a new poster to the forum but a old observer.

I have a child with Autism age 6 ,he has behavioural promblems, issues with concentration, cant seem to sit down for longer than 5 minutes at a time and he needs a lot of sensory stimulation throuout the day.

He has briefly done some biomedical interventions at the Autism clinic in london and he's visted Breakspear hospital in the past.

Nobody that i have seen has been able to help me with his ADHD symtoms and behaviour issues he has had more than 40 diffrent supplements since he was 3 . He is now 6 and i am desprate to find him some help for these issues. Can anyone advise me on alternitive medince that work for ADHD and behaviour issues as i am desprate?

He is under the care of my local CAHMS and is on the weighting list to see a doctor at Breakspear.1. we have tried Melatonin for sleep issues it worked for a year then the affect wore of after a year. 2. Clonodine worked at night to get him to sleep more than 8hours, but then he had a allegic reation to it, as it contains lactose and my son has a dairy allergy.L-Theanine had no effect on calming my son down. I have tried so many other diffrent supplements and spent so much money on things that dont work for him. we have also tried homeopathy but this also failed please help as i dont want to go down thr ritalin route Thanks.

Could he tolerate chiropractic treatment and does he get SI OT + daily home programme - constant movement can be a compensation strategy by the child to try to resist gravity. Have you tried sitting him on a physio ball, wobble cushion or T stool whilst doing table top activity- imbalance can improve concentration; weighted jackets and now weighted belts can really work for some kids with poor body awareness/proprioception to improve focus and concentration but they need to be worn in short bursts and you would need OT advice on the weight to use (can be worn under clothes). (If using a chiro you might have to allow for quite a few getting-used-to treatment sessions and maybe try to find one used to treating kids on the go).

Hi, everyone thanks for the reply. No i dont think he has had any adrenal

support supplements.

He goes to a special school were their is a OT present. She has given me things

to do with him at home like beanbags for crashing into, mini trampoline for

excess energy . I tried a lot of these things but because of his ADHD he goes

from one thing to next in a matter of minutes. He has a weighted vest and belt,

but he can only tolerate these for a short periods. I will defo look into

getting a wobble cushion or a T stool as he is getting behind with his work at

school.

CAHMS have gven him a perscription for Hydroxyzine antihistamine but this his

having very little affect on him. How do the adrenal support supps help with

hyperactivity? Many Thanks M.

We had fantastic advice from Sally Bunday of hyperactive childrens support group.  First advice was hair test and as she suggested showed very low in magnesium and zinc - apparently this is always the case.

We then did feingold diet - quite difficult to do but worked.  Once we had seen improvements we used no fenol so we could add the fruits back but have never added back the additives and especially preservatives.

Feingold is suppose to achieve same results as ritalin.  Once we introduced no fenol, even when we added back salicyaltes the hyperactivity stayed away.I understand the HACSG has now disestablished but I know Sally is still actively helping families.  I'm sure you could locate her with google if you wanted to consider this approach.

You could try Tyrosine on an empty stomach I believe it works in a similar way

to Ritalin and as been suggested ACE might be worth a go to help a bit with

sensory issues.

Most parents with ADHD kids however think they're being taken care of when they

get the prescription to put their kid on speed.

Now that there is a shortage of the stuff these parents will be desparately

seeking alternatives. Please forward the message below (including my sinature

with the URL's intact) to anyone and any list where this might be true.

OTC AGENTS TO PROMOTE NORMAL HEALTHY ATTENTION AND ACTIVITY LEVELS.

Ritalin, Adderall, etc. work by helping the brain maintain higher levels of the

catecholamine neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine. They also affect

epinephrine (also called adrenaline) which mostly does things outside the brain.

These 3 neurotransmitters are collectively referred to as the 'catecholamines,'

and are all made by the same enzymes mostly.

There are many over the counter agents that are quite safe and can also increase

the levels of or the effects of these neurotransmitters and that have similar

effects on people who take them. The effects are mild, and do not cause any

dependence or habituation so these OTC agents don't have abuse potential. They

can be used alone for mild effects, or combined with the prescription agents to

make those work better (or at a lower dose).

l-tyrosine and l-phenylalanine are amino acids - ordinary components of the diet

- that the body makes the catecholamine neurotransmitters from. Taking several

grams a day of these makes a person have lots more of these neurotransmitters.

Vitamin B6 is a cofactor in the conversion of these amino acids to

neurotransmitters and 100 mg with each meal helps improve conversion and

increase the amount of catecholoamines.

The way the catecholamines work in your brain is to bind to a receptor that

turns on an enzyme and makes something called " cyclic adenosine monophosphate'

or cyclic AMP or cAMP for brevity, inside the cells. cAMP is the signalling

molecule that tells a nerve cell to do what it is supposed to do. More

catecholamine activity, be it from a normal healthy brain, or ritalin or

adderall, or from eating l-tyrosine or l-phenylalanine means more cAMP.

There is a nutritional supplement called forskolin, or coleus forskohlii

extract, that activates this same enzyme. Taking forskolin raises cAMP levels

and has the same effect on the neurons in question as taking ritalin. Reasonable

amounts to take for a small child are 10 mg a few times a day (and adjust dose

for best response), adults can take 30-50 mg at a time. You can get this in nice

small capsules at www.lef.org or www.vrp.com. It is also available at many other

vendors.

The reason cAMP doesn't just build up and up and up and up until you are focused

like a laser beam on an ant walking across your desk is that there is also an

enzyme that destroys it. Some very familiar over the counter agents block that

enzyme. Destroying cAMP more slowly means levels go up and it has a similar

effect to taking ritalin. These very familiar agents are caffeine and its

relatives. Coffee. Tea. Cola. Chocolate.

Tea has theophylline which doesn't lead to as much of a feeling of being

focussed as caffeine does. Depending on what your kid likes and how he acts

coffee or cola (or no-doz) may be preferable to tea, or vice versa. Tea is

especially good in allergic and asthmatic people.

While these agents individually are seldom used in large enough amounts to have

the impact of a nice big dose of ritalin or adderall, if you combine them they

are pretty potent. They act together synergystically (and are also synergistic

with the adderall or ritalin if combined with those and permit use of lower

dosages).

One last comment is that much of how these drugs supposedly work is by enhancing

norepinephrine activity. Strattera is a drug for ADHD that specifically does

this and only this. The old cold remedy, pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) that you have

to sign your life away to get any more is a very close relative of Adderall and

norepinephrine and in the body does what norepinephrine does. It promotes

energy, focus and attention. It also sometimes promotes aggression. It can also

be combined with the materials above if need be.

If you can't get the stimulant medication you or your child uses for ADHD you

might try the above substitutes. Most people report them as being less 'harsh'

feeling and having fewer side effects.

He is now 6 and i am desprate to find him some help for these issues. Can anyone

advise me on alternitive medince that work for ADHD and behaviour issues as i am

desprate?

> He is under the care of my local CAHMS and is on the weighting list to see a

doctor at Breakspear.1. we have tried Melatonin for sleep issues it worked for a

year then the affect wore of after a year. 2. Clonodine worked at night to get

They act together synergystically (and are also synergistic

with the adderall or ritalin if combined with those and permit use of lower

dosages).
