Guest guest
Hello All...I am 30 years old and have just been diagnosed with asthma.....in the last month i have had 2 doctor visits and 2 visits to the emergency room having a VERY HARD time breathing......im sure everyone knows what i mean,,,almost to the point where you think you are goin to die(what an awful feeling) i was told by my medical doctor that my past yearly pulmonary tests have indicated that i may have had the " onset " of asthma and it must have just gotten worse. ive had 2 steriod shots and been on the steriod pack ...now i am currently using albuterol inhaler and zopanex when needed...i find myself having attacks EVERYDAY,,ususally in the evening that last anywhere from 20 mins to a few hours...i struggle to get my breath so that it makes my chest hurt and makes the muscles in my neck and shoulders hurt.....then it will slowly ease off and im back to breathing better.......my question is ,,,is this all normal to having asthma..and if i am having attacks everyday should i still be some sorta steroid or other medication to keep it under control...i dont know much about asthma .....but i DO know that i am someone that produces kidney stones as well ,,and i think i would much rather live with kidney stones than asthma...this is totally terrible,,i cant even go outside without having an attack.....any answers and support will be very much appreciated....thanks .....stephanie
Guest guest
Hi June....Thanks for you information...its far much more than my doctor has given me. I want to explain why im so concerned .......for several years now only at times i would suddenly have a hard time catching my breath...usually it would be when i would lay down in the bed...then i would have to sit up and try and try to catch my breath,,well i wouldnt think anything of it,,it did concern me but i never thought asthma.....well last month same thing,,i went to bed one night and sat up gasping for air...this was on a sunday night ...well i was able to get to sleep by trying hard to relax..well the next day after getting up it hit me again....i thought well its got to get better....it didnt..went all day having a hard time catching my breath..to the point i couldnt hardly talk,,,get up or move around i was in the bed all day..well the next morning,,no better,,so i had my husband take me to the emergency room,,they tell me its bronchitus..although i didnt feel sick,,,i took their word for it..put me on levaquin,,sent me home ..and that friday i was NO better..still couldnt catch my breath....so i went to my family doctor .when i got there i was having such a bad attack i was having a panic attack along with it..crying couldnt breathe..im sure you know what i mean. well my doctor was trying to have a normal conversation with me and i couldnt even talk,he said it was asthma,,they gave me a steriod shot and a breathing treatment..sent me home...i was still having trouble catching my breath....i was so frustrated,,i didnt know what was wrong.......i couldnt figure out why it wasnt getting easier....well that sunday night,,same thing,,another bad attack,,i called my doctor that was on call,,,he said to go to the hospital and that he would meet me there....on the way to the hospital i felt like passing right out,,i was TOTALLY EXHAUSTED from tryin to breath..my chest was hurting so bad and my neck and shoulders....really scared my husband...ok so i get to the hospital where i have to sit in the waiting room like that for and hour and a half because my doctor never even showed up..never saw him..they were using those amonia strips to keep me alert..it was AWFUL.i really thought i was dieing....when they got me back they gave me 2 breathing treatments of zopanex and a steriod shot,,and a week supply of steroids..sent me home......and after a few days i was pretty much back to normal,,at least i was able to catch my breath..However now its an asthma attack everyday......i do have the albuterol inhalers and a nebulizer that i use zopanex....i guess it helps because my breathing does get better after about an hour or 2.......i dont want to be on steroids all the time.....like you said ive heard about bad effects from those too..I am changing medical doctors......and have a new appt with her next week.....what medicines should i ask her about? Advair? Singulair? u mentioned the Ventolin and Atrovent with the nebulizer? Im sorry this was so long..and i appreciate you takin the time to read and answer my emails.....the support really means alot.....thanks very much.......stephanie Re: New to the group......need some answers plz! Hi Steph, you have my deepest sympathy, you could be describing me too. Mild asthma all my life till 2 years ago when hormone levels started to drop pre menopause and I am now a Brittle asthmatic( out of control )and on so many medicines it is unbelievable. I have found the only thing that rescues me is a nebuliser, if you haven't got one get one. I neb Ventolin and Atrovent together, much more effective than inhalers. Also I have been taking Magnesium supplements, as all asthmatics are supposed to be low on magnesium and I feel I have improved on these. The steroids are bad news, lots of side effects and for me they haven't been that helpful at times. Are you on oral Prednisolone (steroid)? Anything I can help just ask, become quite an expert patient over the last 2 years. Guest guest
Hi Steph, boy do I know what you are going through, been there done all that. Firstly the asthma can be triggered by a virus infection or bronchitis etc. Your airways become hyperactive and the asthma takes control. It is so scary to have an attack like that, in an emergency situation I boil the kettle and stand over it trying to breathe because the steam helps to open the airways. Likewise strong black coffee, the caffeine opens everything up, the asthma drug Theophylline works like that. Theophylline has been a good drug for me but can have side effects. It can take a long time for your airways to settle down after an attack like you had, I also find that when I'm bad lying down is the worst thing to do. I try to sleep propped up and always on left side because the right hand lung is bigger and therefore you don't want it to be under any pressure as it holds more air (something to do with heart makes left lung smaller due to space) I don't find Ventolin or Bricanyl inhalers much use, the nebuliser is always first choice. Have you been on any other antibiotics for lung infection, sometimes you can have a persistant bug which aggravates asthma, ask them to do a sputum culture for bugs. Levaquin might not be the right ab to use, depends on the bug. If you cough up a lot of gunk, this can point to infection although asthma attacks increase mucus production. Finally I am now on a new drug called Seretide (Advair) and it is helping more than anything I've had before so ask about that. You should also have a Peak flow meter which measure your exhaled breath, it's like a thermometer for asthma and can indicate how bad you are and if you need to go to hospital. Bet you can't wait for your appointment next week, I hope this new doctor is more helpful, I've seen good and bad and finding a good one is half the battle. Hang on in there Love June > Hi June....Thanks for y

Guest guest
I currently use advair. But today I had to go to the doctors because I haven't been feeling all that well, and since my episode in November my husband gets worried when he sees me getting out of control. So now I am back on prednisone and a z-pack to try and get myself back on track. For me, honestly when I do find something that works for my asthma, usually within a few months either my body because used to it or something because it will just stop working. I tried singulair when it first came out but that made my asthma worse. It's a trial and error thing for me. Good Luck
Guest guest
, I know what you are going through. I was diagnosed with asthma last August. I couldn't go outside without having an attack either, what you wrote described me to a T. I also was only on Albuterol(this does not control asthma, just helps loosen the muscles around the airways, and does nothing for the inflamation) for 2 months when I was first diagonosed, it did not take care of the problem. It sounds like your asthma is not controlled at all. Mine wasn't either. There are 2 parts to asthma that cause difficulty breathing, the muscles tightening around the airways and inflamation in the airways. When I finally got to see a pulmonoligist, she put me on medicine to control the inflamation as well, not just to help the symptoms. It sounds like you need to see a pulmonoligist and I'm sure they will give you some different medication, to control the inflamation and maybe a longacting bronchiodialater, also(like Advair), to help get your asthma under control. You definately need something more than Alburerol. I take Advair, Singulair, Nasarel, Albuterol by nebulizer, and also Xolair shots every 2 weeks. I just got off of prednisone which I had been on since Oct. I am feeling better all the time. This combination seems to be getting my asthma under control but everybody is different. I have severe allergic asthma, it sounds like you do too? Have you had allergy tests? This is something to ask your Doctor about. If your asthma is allergic there are alot of things you can do around the house to help your allergies, which in turn helps your asthma. Let me know if it is and I will tell you what I did. Don't get discouraged, I know that is hard because here until the last 2 months I really wasn't seeing much improvement, but the Xolair is finally starting to work(it sometimes can take 6 months) and believe it or not I was actually able to work out in the yard for the first time since this started. I think I will be able to get some of my life back. Once you get to the right Doctor and get some different medicine you will too. Learn all you can about asthma, that has really helped me. There is lots of info on the net. alot of the drug companys have web sites with alot of info. GlaxoKline, Genentech, Novartis etc. Also there is a website for Singulair. There is another yahoo group you might want to check out, lots of good info in the back posts about asthma. The Albuterol inhaler did not have much effect, but Albuterol by nebulized made a big difference. --- In asthma , mrslentz@a... wrote: > Welcome . Guest guest
, First of all everyone, sorry for all the seperate posts but its seems like I can't get everything into one. I just keep thinking of things that might help . If your asthma is worse laying down, you might want to ask youe Doctor about GERD (reflux disease), My Doc tells me you can have this and have no symptoms and it will aggrivate your asthma and even cause asthma. The stomach acid causes inflamation. My Doc just started me on Protonix, too soon yet to tell if it helps.--- In asthma , June Fraser <junefraser@m...> wrote: > Hi Steph, boy do I know what you are going through, been there done all > that. Guest guest
Hello ....thank you for the helpful information..im struggling so much right now,,its nice to know someone actually understands how im feeling. Not that i wish this on anyone. I am goin to talk to my doctor about other meds for my asthma because like you i dont feel like its under control...i feel like there is SOMETHING that could help me i just dont know what it is....i will ask about the Advair. i think i will make an appt with a pulmonologist. My current doctor doesnt seem too concerned about my asthma,,,,,after all of this im changing doctors and maybe she will get me through it. i have read alot of information on the net about asthma,,and most of it describes me to a T! i havent been allergy tested,,i guess because my doctor hasnt recommended that. like i said he just wants me to use the inhaler and zanex for the panic attacks,,when really the inhaler does absolutley nothing for me.....it was the emergency room doctor that gave me a script for Zopanex that i use in the nebulizer...it seems to help some but doesnt instantly make me start breathing better....sometimes its still a couple of hours ..thats why im confused....i guess it is like you are saying that there are certain meds that will actually work for me and i just need to talk to my doctor about them,,which is what i intend on doing....Thanks for the words of encouragement,,it really means alot......best of luck to you,,,,,,stephanie From: To: asthma Sent: Tuesday, March 01, 2005 10:38 AM Subject: Re: New to the group......need some answers plz! ,I know what you are going through. You definately need something more than Alburerol.I take Advair, Singulair, Nasarel, Albuterol by nebulizer, and also Xolair shots every 2 weeks. Don't get discouraged, I know that is hard because here until the last 2 months I really wasn't seeing much improvement, but the Xolair is finally starting to work(it sometimes can take 6 months)and believe it or not I was actually able to work out in the yard for the first time since this started. I think I will be able to get some of my life back. Once you get to the right Doctor and get some different medicine you will too.Learn all you can about asthma, that has really helped me. There is lots of info on the net. alot of the drug companys have web sites with alot of info. GlaxoKline, Genentech, Novartis etc. Also there is a website for Singulair. There is another yahoo group you might want to check out, lots of good info in the back posts about asthma. Guest guest
Actually, my 3 yr old son is on Prevacid as well as the asthma stuff. Basically he was sitting in the Pulminologist's office last June- healthy as an ox and started weezing in front of the Dr. while playing with a puzzle. His lungs were totally clear-- Dr. put him on prevacid-- and his behavior changed over night-- I had a great child before, I had a WONDERFUL child on teh medication--he ate better, slept better, and overall behaved better. he also grew about 1-1/2 " in about 3 months. Last winter, every cold turned into a sinus infection into mild- moderate asthma. the DR. said that because the GERD had the back of his throat/ bottom of his sinuses irritated, every time he got a cold, his sinuses got more irritated to the point of an infection. On the Prevacid/ QVAR this year, we did not have any problems til we got stupid and tried to take him off. Oh well-- live and learn. Guest guest
, My first Doctor that I went to also thought the asthma was all in my head, prescribed meds for anxiety, which did not help my breathing at all(I just was more relaxed about it), so I didn't take them more than twice. It was when I went to the pulmonoligist that she did a blopod test for allergies and said my IgE level was off the scale. And that I had severe asthma and allergies.-Then I started to get results, although my asthma is hard to control the Dr figured it out and I feel much better. I think you are right in seeing another Doctor. When I first started to use the nebulizer, I was taking too deep a breaths and this also will cause you too feel worse or no better after the neb treatment. Although you will feel better after an hour or 2. It irritates the asthma. I found if I make an effort to breath normally like I wasn't on the neb it would help me alot more. Some of the instructions say to take a deep breath every so often, my doctor said to not even do that, so I don't. It is kind of hard to breath normally, just try to ignore that you have that in your mouth. If your asthma is caused by allergies you might also ask your Dr about Xolair. I know there is something out there that will help you. Guest guest
, My first Doctor that I went to also thought the asthma was all in my head, prescribed meds for anxiety, which did not help my breathing at all(I just was more relaxed about it), so I didn't take them more than twice. Not that i wish this on anyone. I am goin to talk to my doctor about other meds for my asthma because like you i dont feel like its under control...i feel like there is SOMETHING that could help me i just dont know what it is....i will ask about the Advair. i think i will make an appt with a pulmonologist. My current doctor doesnt seem too concerned about my asthma,,,,,after all of this im changing doctors and maybe she will get me through it. i have read alot of information on the net about asthma,,and most of it describes me to a T! i havent been allergy tested,,i guess because my doctor hasnt recommended that. like i said he just wants me to use the inhaler and zanex for the panic attacks,,when really the inhaler does absolutley nothing for me.....it was the emergency room doctor that gave me a script for Zopanex that i use in the nebulizer...it seems to help some but doesnt instantly make me start breathing better....sometimes its still a couple of hours ..thats why im confused....i guess it is like you are saying that there are certain meds that will actually work for me and i just need to talk to my doctor about them,,which is what i intend on doing....Thanks for the words of encouragement,,it really means alot......best of luck to you,,,,,,stephanie > > From: > To: asthma > Sent: Tuesday, March 01, 2005 10:38 AM > Subject: Re: New to the group......need some answers plz! > > > > , > > I know what you are going through.
