Guest guest
Brilliant Kishor ! You have surpassed yourself ! I often used to wonder about it but never had the guts to say so. You have very nicely dissected the complicated issue and displayed the target organ ! V.K.Gupta 1976 Why women dress up ***CAUTION! Contains traces of Viagra induced sick humour!*** WHY WOMEN DRESS UP Reading so many mails regarding what to dress up in for a party or a do set my mind thinking. Women spend hours together deciding on what to wear, in what style, in what colour, with what coordinates, with what purse. Probably the only question they do not ask is with which husband. Soon that also may come in fashion. " You know, I shall take my dear husband number 4 with my grey dress. His stately grey mane matches perfectly with this shade. " " I think I will carry my bald husband along. This time I shall be wearing next to nothing! " The ostentatious purpose of this whole cumbersome exercise is to impress the males. I decided to conduct a survey of a limited sample of males. " Excuse me! Could I have your views on the lady with the Benarasi saree? " " Eh? What is a Benarasi saree? Do you mean the dame with the big.... " " Er, this a family survey. I'll ask someone else. " " I was going to say 'Big eyes'. " I sidle up to another unsuspecting quarry. " Excuse me! Could you tell me which lady is the most dressed up? " " Uh! I guess I couldn't say. Now if you ask me who is the least dressed, boy, do I have some juicy candidates! " The third guy seemed quite straightforward. I asked him, " Sir, can you name the best dressed woman here? " " Of course, I could, handsome. " He simpered shyly. " But you are not quite bad yourself. What are you doing the rest of the evening, sweety? " I hastily removed myself from the scene. This guy was just forward but not straight. In conclusion, men are not interested in what women dress in. They are interested only in what they are not dressed in. So maybe the answer lay elsewhere. It crossed my mind that maybe women dress up to impress women. As I do not like to leave a good thing lying down, I decided to conduct a survey among the ladies. " Er, hullo! Could I have your opinion on that lady in the purple Kanjivaram saree? " " That bitch? Of course you could have my views, but they would be unprintable. " " How about some printable quotes? " " Listen! If you call that pale imitation of a printed saree a Kanjivaram, that is the greatest insult to all discerning females! " I hastily beat a retreat. A nice smiling lady comes in view. " Hullo Auntie! Could I get your views on . " " Who are you calling an Auntie? " " Not you! Not you! That other lady. " Hmm! This is a more dangerous survey than surveying males. A gorgeous female looms up. " Madame, what is your opinion about that frilly dress right next to that orange mini skirt? " " You call that a dress? Frills went out of fashion ages ago. And that mini with those spindly legs - Eeech! " I corner a beautiful girl with noodle straps and a halter. " Could I have your opinion about that girl in the green micro mini? " Turning up her nose, " Some girls will expose anything to garner attention! " she said, shaking her halter expressively, " But the ones with real class never need to stoop to such low levels. " She bent just a little to emphasize her point, or should I say points? Just then I spotted an elderly Amma with a comfortable tree trunk girth. This would surely be a better bet for a safe and sane opinion. I crept up to her and let her have my spiel. " How would you rate that blue saree with the zaree border? " Amma looked at me fondly. " She is nice, of course, but did you see that cute little thing in the corner? The one with the burgundy Salwar. She is the real beauty. " I craned and saw a mousy looking thing in the corner. " Yeah! Sort of! " " Good! You have such good taste. She is my daughter, by the way. She appeared for the 12th, but decided that learning how to cook for the husband and keep the house clean and proper were more important. Don't you agree? " " Uh! Yes! " " Good! I knew you would have good tastes. Let me introduce you. Sheetal! Sheetal! Come here! " " Er! Excuse me! I think somebody is calling me. " So that rules out females also. I'm sure that no woman dresses up to impress kids. For a male, there are only a few basic colours - Red, blue, black and yellow. But ask a female and you will realize how colour blind you are. There is Chutney green and Peacock blue and turquoise purple and Imrati orange and millions of other colours, which I think even the most advanced computer screen will not have the capacity to differentiate. So then whom do women dress up for? It is not for males! Definitely. It is also not for females! The answer struck me when I was shaving absent mindedly thinking about this earth shattering mystery. Millions of man, or should we say, woman hours are spent everyday around the world just wondering whether the diamond earrings go better with the purple dress or should silver jewellery be substituted? Salwar or Saree assumes greater importance than Bush or Kerry. Billions of jobs like textiles, cosmetics and leather makers all over the world run solely on this craze of females. Like lightening, the answer struck me. It was staring at me in my face. Yes! I was shaving and there was the answer in front of me. Women all over the world dress up for the mirror. They spends hours together in front of the mirror just for a five minute appearance at a party. It is not for the five minutes, but for the hours and hours of sheer joy that they get just dressing up! Guest guest
Dear Anshu, Your mail reminds me of the time when I was the editor of our Sushruta. I used to think that the word was spelt " beserk " . However, the magazine secretary thought that it was spelt " bersek " . We used to go alternately to Wardha to proof read the printer's drafts. So every alternate revision the word used to jump from beserk to bersek, and back again. Remember, this was in the times when we had no dictionaries in Sevagram and Windows was something you curtained. I don't remember which version finally made it, but when I returned to Pune, the first thing that I did after reaching home was look up the dictionary. Imagine my stupefaction when I saw that the correct spelling was " berserk " ! Kishore Shah 1974 PS: Thanks everyone for your compliments and for appointing me the official women's psychologist. Guest guest
Shyam You forget the most important pre-party (or any other occasion) question, to which the answer should definitely be " NO " . In fact, it should be substantiated with an " of course not " . The question is, " Do I look big in this? " The answer remains the same even if you're not looking or in another room, in fact if you actually have to look to answer the question then you're a dead man...tab to tum zaroor badal jaaoge!!
