Just met a mum who's son was diagnosed with severe Autism in June. He has only turned 3. He talked and played up until a yr ago. She is trying to implement gf cf diet which she is finding hard as he refuses to eat anything. The main problem she is having is him smearing and he also poos in the bath. I think he needs to see a gastro and wonder if he is loaded. Just posting on to see if anyone else has any views or ideas to what she can do to stop the smearing. She has tried the baby vests etc but he still gets into his nappy. He is non verbal and not toilet trained. She is new to the whole Autism game so just trying to help her.

Everything gut issue here caused smearing, candida, bacteria, parasites, inflamation the whole shebang, as we got better it became less and less, till nothing. Took me years to sort this out because back in the day there was next to no help or advice available and far less supplements. I would recommend a parasite cleanse immediately, he is probably mouthing and transferring, enzymes, SCD, CF will probably all have to be implemented. Oxalates may also be an issue, does he rage?

Food diary as of yesterday, look for individual intolerances.

Is he on any supplements at all, probiotics? Has he been on antibiotics?

His diet before was cereal bars, bread,Dried fruit and milk. He constantly has meltdowns and doesn't sleep well either. Wakes up at 4am a lot.

It's hard to convince her he needs clearing out when he poos normal poos most days.

She tried diatom and I think it was working as loads of dark stuff came out and I saw him the next day after he went on it and felt he was calmer. When she stopped it sloppy stuff came out. She stopped it as she couldn't cope with all the extra poos and smearing.

In my experience smearing has always been down to bacteria issues, sounds like a clear out with Oxypowder might help him. He might still be regressing (Sam was at this age) which makes thinsg very hard to judge. If his diet was OK before and not just focusing on bad stuff then she might try enzymes while she finmds out what he will eat. Sam starved himself for 4 days once, then I gave in.........

Hi Kerry,This is a long shot as our kids are all so different but it worked for my son Cameron when he went through a stage of picking and smearing, especially in the bath...I tried many things before I realised that what he was doing had actually become habit, part of his routine so to speak. His worst problem was while in the bath he had got used to squishing something between his fingers so would force himself to toilet in the bath. Completely by accident one day he started playing with a very soggy bar of soap, squishing it instead, and it worked. He didn't toilet in the bath and as long as he had a squishy bar of soap to play with it took his mind off toileting in the bath. I kept his bathing short during this period. After about 10 days of this he was fine, he no longer needed the soap to squish and he never messed in the bath again.The same helped with the little bit of smearing he started when not in the bath, but he wasn't too bad out of the bath, I would keep vigilant, try and determine when he would be toileting and then give him a squishy toy to play with (one for this ocassion only so it was novel) to take his mind off the smearing. Once the habit was broken, he forgot about it and no longer needed the toy.Something like this might work for your friend, it is persevering to start with but in no time it is well worth the patience needed! I hope your friend finds something that helps.Colleen

We found those all in one UV sun suits helped also but out them on backwards

with the zip up the back - cheaper than houdini suits

He freaks out with baths at the min so don't think he will do a shower at all. X
