Hi,Welcome to the list, I'm sorry to hear the news about your son, we found it really hard going those first few months after the diagnosis but you are in the right place - here are a couple of links that you might want to look at:

http://www.treatingautism.co.uk/beginners-guide/on this page you will find a link to a download called constipation and autism -http://www.treatingautism.co.uk/useful-documents/ this will give you a list of interventions to help with the constipation - any questions you have, please ask, there's lots of experience here.

My son was similar in that he had an op when he was 11 months old and it took him 6 months to get over it - I thought I was loosing my mind.   I do hope that you can find some remedy for your son, my son had some similar problems but he is now fine and has regular bowel movements which seems like a bloody miracle given how terrible things were.

Also, I would encourage you (if you haven't already) to start some type of intensive intervention with your child to teach functional communication, playskills, etc.  We started with my son when he was 24 months old and that, along with biomed, has brought him very far (he's 7 now).  There is ABA/VB, SCERTS, PRT, RDI and many other interventions.  A good book to get a view of interventions and some basic tips for helping your child now can be found in http://www.amazon.co.uk/Overcoming-Autism-Finding-Strategies-Transform/dp/0143034685/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8 & qid=1325780859 & sr=8-1

Also, it is important to understand that your child's brain is at it's most neuroplastic the younger he/she is and all of the clinical research points to the fact that early intensive intervention produces optimal outcomes (or best results) in children with autism.  I say this not to stress you out but to encourage you to do as much as you can at this young age.

Lastly, be forewarned, there are no quick fixes, get ready, it's a long ole journey.  Hang in there and ask lots of questions.  I'm in a rush, hope this all makes sense and isn't patronising.

Darla xPS My husband has spent the last 5 years studying child development, early intervention, various methods of intervention, etc.  He would be more than happy to chat with you on the phone or I would be as well.  We have run a home ABA/VB program for our son (and biomed as well) for 5 years.

Hello Sally,

Based on what you've said, it would make sense to me to focus on a good diet and

repopulating good bacteria. The book Gut and Psychology Syndrome does a pretty

good job of talking you through diet and the importance of the bacterial

ecosystem (I'm assuming destroyed in your son after the surgery and accompanying

antiobitics).

I see Darla has pointed you to some constipation resources, but you need to

understand that the constipation is just a symptom of other probably much more

signficant problems, including the bacterial/yeast/low stomach acid/poor immune

function/nutrtional deficiencies which all could result from the surgery and

other insults that were less obvious.

It is a long road back, but well worth the effort of trying to restore your

child's health.
