Guest guest
My son is fifteen next month, we have been doing biomed since he was 3 with success but still many deficits to address. If Jon suggests chelation check it out here before you do anything, he is not as experienced as us with implementing that treatment safely. Much harder to introduce diet when they get bigger, are you doing digestve enzymes instead? Mandi Sam 47XYY, Regressive Autism, Seizure Disorder, Heavy Metal Toxicity and Severe Cute-ness Hi, I am new here. We have a son age 15 who has been under the care of Jon Tommey at the Autism Clinic and is doing really well on supplements, helping to calm his anxiety and puberty. Does anyone have a child with a similar age I can share experiences with. There doesnt seem to be many people I have come across who are doing this regime for older children. Has been impossible to implement the GFCF diet, my son has been taking supps for 8 weeks now with marked changes! Thanks
Guest guest
Hi My daughter is 18. We didn't start biomed till she was 15.We started the GFCF at the same time.It was a struggle and my husband didn't believe we could do it he thought it would be impossible. Somehow we did do it by going cold turkey for the whole family ( in the house anyway) We initially used GF substitutes then added in healthier foods gradually.I make lots of blended soups smoothies and vegetable juices to get nutrients into her. Before we started the diet my daughter was very aggressive with severe behavioural problems. It has made a tremendous difference her aggression has melted away and her behaviours calmed to the extent that we could begin blood testing which has started to show us her underlying health problems. She still has severe ocd but continues to improve in terms of language and communication. We have added in houstons enzymes as well as continuing the diet and this seems to be really helping too. Guest guest
We began diet and chelation w a 16y in 2001. GFCFSF was huge in terms of seizure control. It was a struggle as she truly seemed addicted to those items. Since I was a bit of a 'doubter' I had asked for a urine opiod test. She was sky high in both gluten and casein opiod residue. Her withdrawal, which we did cold turkey, looked like DTs. We got an old fridge for the garage for forbidden items and put locks on it. She spent a good 2 years in addict mentality - searching, hiding and sneaking the items that would give her a buzz. She knew instinctively that Elmer's glue had gluten and slatherd herself with it until the supple ran out. Same w bandaids and sunscreen. A 'why' on aut-mer group helped me figure it out. The diet can be done! In terms of treatment - chelation has been the #1 intervention. Although a few years of domestic upheaval put a stop to chelation, we continue now as improvements are ongoing. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Autism-Mercury/ has good info in the files e a safe protocol. Glad you are seeing improvements w supps! > > Hi, I am new here. Guest guest
Thanks Mandi. So encouraging to hear that your son and others on this list are doing really well. I started my son GF only when he was 4 for a year but abandoned it as the strain was too much (back then I wish I knew what I knew now)! My son still self restricts his diet, he will only eat McCain Micro chips, southern fried chicken, vanilla icecream all the wrong things. When he hit puberty he was self harming badly (never been aggressive) but very distressing, he was hitting his whole body. He had a breakdown. We went down the psychiatric route for 3 years, he was put on Risperdone low dose and this was the only time that he ate for England! and put on weight. I now know better about the psych drugs and what they can do to our children..... Thank you for reminding me about the digestive enzymes, we did in fact try these for a while and they really helped him. I am loathe to give him more supps at the moment though as he is on so many per day he is struggling to get these down himself and getting him to eat in the mornings is really tough going. I am not entirely happy with Mr Tommey to be honest with you, he has left us pretty high and dry. But then my son had suspected Marfans Syndrome back at the beginning of last summer and he had a round of hospital tests which was distressing for us all, so we all but abandoned the supps regime. Thankfully he doesnt have Marfans but just the features of the syndrome, very tall, long limbs, long fingers (very)= painful joints. He had an unusual chromosome result come back from the consultant geneticist which is linked to my husband, they said it was just an anomoly but they wanted us to seriously consider entering our son into further research that they are carrying out, we have refused. Glad we have started the regime again as its really helping him to be calmer, less anxious, more communicative + lessening the puberty side of things! Guest guest
Hi We havent looked into chelation as yet, but my son too has seizures. Not many, has had 6 tonic clonics since age 11 - he is on 600mg of Tegretol a day. I am not ready to take this away yet as my son is early on in the supps regime. I know that my son's diet needs cleaning up. Yes, the results for the urine test were higher for casein when tested age 4 - wouldnt know what its like nowadays! Thanks for the link to the Mercury forum, will take a look when ready - just conscious I dont want to overload myself at the moment. So pleased that your daughter is doing so well - certainly not been easy for you all. Alison > > > > Hi, I am new here. Guest guest
It might be a possibility for us as a family to go GFCF when our daughter, 18, goes to university in October.....its a maybe! So good you have climbed the mountain and that your daughter is benefiting, that's great to hear and so encouraging. I am not sure at this stage whether to find a new DAN doctor or not and just go with what I learn here as you all seem so knowledgeable. Alison > > Hi > > My daughter is 18. How was your son's diet before, when did you start? Any tips or advice would be really useful, thanks. Alison > > > > Hi, I am new here. Guest guest
Alison, Unless the tegretol is compounded, it probably has a milk ingredient plus a lot of other nasty stuff. It took us 6mos and the help of a couple pharmacists before novartis would own up and say that YES there was an unlisted milk component. Once we got tegretol compounded the seizure gluten/casein connection was all too apparent. Glad you are thinking diet cleanup too. > > > > > > Hi, I am new here. Does anyone have a child with a similar age I can share experiences with. There doesnt seem to be many people I have come across who are doing this regime for older children. Has been impossible to implement the GFCF diet, my son has been taking supps for 8 weeks now with marked changes! > > > Thanks > > > > > >
Guest guest
Well done for getting this sorted out - so now Novartis make Tegretol compounded? sorry, am not too familiar with the drug side. How would I go about sorting this out for our son? His last seizure was in May. Is your daughter not on tegretol at all now? I feel that this is the very first thing to start cleaning up on, thanks, Alison To: Autism-Biomedical-Europe Sent: Tuesday, 3 January 2012, 17:45 Subject: Re: Anyone with a teenager on biomed? Alison, Unless the tegretol is compounded, it probably has a milk ingredient plus a lot of other nasty stuff. It took us 6mos and the help of a couple pharmacists before novartis would own up and say that YES there was an unlisted milk component. Once we got tegretol compounded the seizure gluten/casein connection was all too apparent. Glad you are thinking diet cleanup too. > > > > > > Hi, I am new here. We have a son age 15 who has been under the care of Jon Tommey at the Autism Clinic and is doing really well on supplements, helping to calm his anxiety and puberty.
