Guest guest
Ask as many questions as you need to. That is what we are here for. Yes, from what I understand all helmets are passive. I've never heard of a locally made helmet being active. How old is ? An older baby would do much better with an active band. Passive helmets rely on growth alone. > Are all helmets passive? Guest guest
Hey , I just wanted to let you know that not all helmets are passive. I think that I am the only one of the group that has an active helmet. I have talked to Mayo Clinic about it and why and the difference, and here is what they said. They wanted to improve the doc band (for all of you out there, please do not get mad about this, and I don't know how in the world they found things like this out, but this is what they said.) They did not like the doc band or star band because of the opening on top. They said that if too much pressure was applied that they head could start to grow upwards, instead of fixing the flat spots. That is why they have designed their active locally made helmets. I don't know if there is any truth to this or not, nor do I know if the other Mayo Clinics are the same, that is how the MN one is. I hope that this clears up any confusion out there. Please, please let me know if anyone has any questions. Thanks, Heidi, mom to Jeffry, local "active helmet" MN Re: sorry any question Ask as many questions as you need to. Guest guest
I never even thought of anything like that happening. I don't know if they were just guessing about it or if they actually had proof, I just don' t know. Heidi Re: sorry any question I have heard about the same thing too. Someone told me about a baby who had the helmet. Her head grew upward like a corn shape. I asked my ortho about, he said that can't be true. But I still keep an eye on the head.yifan> > Are all helmets passive? Just wanted to say that we respect all of the information that people share, and it helps to bounce things off of people because we have all been getting varied or misinformation at some point in the process, so its nice to talk with the parents on here and get the real deal- there are so many Docs with different "opinions", and I think the parents can really benefit from being on here and learning that not all Doctors have the correct info, which may lead them to second guess some of the advice they've been given. Your input, as well as everyone in this group (including you lurkers out there! is always welcome and valued here. ' Mom
Guest guest
Carol, thank you so much for your post. I didn't even think of any of this, until I was told by our nero. Also, I know that the Doc band is a wonderful device and if it was available up here in my area, I know that would have been my choice. I did not want to stur up any problems, I was only sharing to the group from what I was told. I did not want to hurt anyone or have anyone afended by what I heard. Thank you, Heidi, mom to Jeffry, local helmet, MN Re: sorry any question I wanted to clear up a possible misunderstanding on how the DOC Band works. The DOC Band does not promote heads growing up. All infants treated with the DOC Band are seen at weekly or biweekly visits for growth adjustments to direct the growth in positive directions. Growth adjustments are performed by specially trained clinicians to assure the correct amount of growth room is provided. When the correct growth room is available, the head will grow in the flattened areas and not in height. Head height occurs when the head is prevented from growing in the posterior region which is why some children who have spent extended time on hard inclined surfaces (car seats, infant carriers, swings) will have head height. Once the bony deformation occurs, a helmet or band, cannot "push it down". Short of surgery, you can't change bone, you can however allow other areas to gain volume, bringing the head back towards symmetry. The DOC Band has been used since 1988 on over 16,000 children and no problems in head height have been reported by physicians who are monitoring these children. Since each company's product is designed differently and treatment protocols vary, please be aware that I can only speak for the DOC Band. I hope this information helps.SincerelyCarol ksonCranial Technologies> > Are all helmets passive? Guest guest
Carol, Thank you so much for clearing that up! I think it's crazy that anyone could or would even try to improve the DOCband. How can an already perfect product be improved? Thanks again! > > > Are all helmets passive?
