<<These are: spinal growth rod surgery starting as young as 2 or 3 years

old, which can permanently deform the child's body and cause potential

serious vital organ problems, because it can make the normal body

cavity smaller- so the heart and lungs grow to normal size, but they

have less space in which to grow.>>This statement seems misleading, IMHO. Growing rod surgery does not "make" the normal body cavity smaller. What "makes" the body cavity smaller is multi-factored. A child's body may just be underdeveloped and will not grow to a full size. The rotation of a curve can twist the rib cage so intensely that one of the lungs won't have any/much room to grow. Any spine/rib abnormalities will cause the body to be asymmetrical. This list is for families with children who have idiopathic scoliosis - meaning there is no known cause. More accurate, I think, is that there are no spine abnormalities. I know many kids here have some kind of underlying connective tissue disorder or something else that may contribute, but not cause, a spine to curve. A growing rod surgery or any surgery for spine correction in young children should be a last resort. Surgery

shouldn't be looked at as a wrong choice. It is necessary for some kids who don't have good outcomes with casting or other non-invasive procedures. Saying this surgery causes the body to be deformed is a mis-statement.CarmellMom to Kara, idiopathic scoliosis and hypothyroidism, Blake 19, GERD, and Braydon 14, VACTERL-congenital scoliosis (fusion surgery 5/96), VEPTR patient #137 (implant 8/01), Thoracic Insufficiency Syndrome (TIS), rib anomalies, missing coccyx, fatty filum/TC (released 4/99 & 12/06), anal stenosis, chronic constipation, horseshoe (cross-fused) kidney, dbl ureter in left kidney, ureterocele (excized 6/95), kidney reflux (reimplant surgery 1/97), neurogenic bladder, dysplastic right leg w/right clubfoot with 8 toes (repaired 2/96, 3/96, 1/97, 3/04), tibial torsion, 4cm length discrepancy-wears 3cm lift, valgus deformity, GERD, Gastroparesis, SUA, etc. http://carmellb-ivil.tripod.com/myfamily/

All I wanted to know was if children have truble sleeping. Problems with leading

to walk or sitting. I just want to know what to expect before my son gets a

cast. He is only 9 months and has a lot of growing to do.

Nora was 2 when she got her first cast so I don't know about the walking or sitting but as far as sleeping it took her about a week to get adjusted the first cast. From what I hear on here it usually takes more time for us to adjust than it does the child, I know it did me!

At first he would get stuck and need to be picked up- he was pretty cool about it, but it upset me to see him stuck- but within a few weeks, maybe 2-3, he gradually just learned to pull himself up on the coffee table, a tree, my legs, etc...and his arms and legs built the strength right back up. No problem. Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 4th cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 21)

Heidi could he get up from the floor with it on? And how did he do that?

,

Our son- at 19 months in his first cast- had no trouble sleeping, except he had to sleep on his back for maybe 2 weeks, because he had to learn to turn over in the cast. He was already walking, and no problems, there, he also ran like the wind. He only had the adjustment of turning over in his crib, and learning to get down on the floor and get back up. He stopped doing stairs for a month, then got right back to them. Each child is unique, but they usually adjust very well.
