What are the rubberbands you are talking about though? Is this something on the band for her scaphy? I don't ever remember hearing rubberbands on the DOCband mentioned before...hmmm! Guest guest
Debbie, since I know nothing about anything, all I can say is hmmm... j/k Ok, this is the deal with the rubberbands. On the sides above 's ears she has rubberbands instead of velcro. The rubber bands expand obviously and apply gentle pressure to the front and back of her head. She is suppose to have 2 rubberbands done in a figure 8 type pattern and then wrapped around these little prong thingy's. I'm sorry I can't describe it better. Maybe someone will chime in here that knows what I am talking about. Again, I am sorry. Still counting rubberbands, Dustie, mom to , 12/23/02 DOCband > > Hello again, had another adjustment today. Guest guest
LOL You are too funny Debbie!! I just love it! I really don't know why they gave her rubberbands and everybody else velcro. Maybe because of the severity of her Scaphy. Maybe someone from CT will chime in and tell us why. Hey, is it ONE....TWO.....??? One....Two....By I think I've got it! Guest guest
Dustie- That's great to hear is progressing so well What are you doing with rubber bands? I am confused. We never used them! Dane's mom DOC Grad
Guest guest
Hi , Thanks. Ok, I'm not good at describing this, so bare with me. 's band is in 2 pieces. A front and back. There is like a little grove on the sides that you wrap the rubberbands around and it holds the band together and applies gentle pressure to her forehead and the back of her head. She doesn't have any velcro on her band as does I guess everybody else. The rubberbands are to be changed once a week. If 1 rubberband breaks we have to change all 4 of them. Did that help? Hello, someone from CT chime in here and help a girl out. lol Dustie, still counting....mom to , DOCband 12/23/02 > Dustie- > That's great to hear is progressing so well > What are you doing with rubber bands? Guest guest
Dustie- Oh wow! That must be different because she has scaphocephaly. How long does that take to put on and off for cleaning? I'm sure I would fumble around with that. I had trouble hooking the rubber bands to my braces as a teenager! LOL! Guest guest
It doesn't take long at all. You just kindly pull it apart and slip it on. Speaking of braces, the rubberbands are in a package for braces. lol It isn't difficult at all, maybe because I thought everyone had them, until I started looking at pictures people had posted. Guest guest
Dear Dustie, Actually, I think you did an excellent job describing it. Most of the parents on this board are familiar with the more traditional 'side-opening' design that has velcro on the side. The side-opening band was designed specifically to treat children with a significant amount of asymmetry and allows the corrective forces to be applied diagonally across the cranium (i.e. from right forehead to left occiput). The band you are describing is the BiCal Band which was developed specifically for treating scaphocephalic heads. In this design medical grade elastics are used to apply the corrective force on the forehead and back of the head, encouraging the head to grow in width. There is also a third design called the Brachy Band which is used to treat brachycephaly by holding width and encouraging growth in length. On top of these three basic designs, we also have bands specifically for use after surgery, and often make special bands for a variety of unique situations. For example, our bands are currently being used for the Egyptian conjoined twins in Dallas to improve their head shape prior to the surgeons separating them.
