Guest guest
Dear Dr Kalantri and Prabha, Just read the mission statement - it is beautiful. The Mission In the spirit of its founder, Dr Sushila Nayar, The Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram, is committed to the pursuit of professional excellence in order to provide accessible and affordable health care to underprivileged rural communities. Just a few humble suggestions - 1. Grammatical error ? <<In the spirit of its founder, Dr Sushila Nayar, The Mahatma Gandhi>> should read as In the spirit of its founder, Dr Sushila Nayar, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences is committed..... 2. to the pursuit of professional excellence while providing accessible and affordable... 3. Underserved is better probably then underprivileged as some people in rural areas are well off and yet medical care is so inaccessible... The Tamil Nadu school fire disaster is a case in point... While we take pride in having worldclass facilities in places like Mumbai catering to the 'haves' from abroad................its gutwrenching to hear stories like these. I am guilty too......in fact on my list of the guilty........I am the first. Ashok 1984 p.s., dear Prabha....your heart seems to be with MGIMS still even though you are with another mission hospital in Bhopal !! Guest guest
Dear Ashok, I would differ from you on the following: > 1. Grammatical error ? <<In the spirit of its founder, Dr Sushila Nayar, The Mahatma Gandhi>> should read as > > In the spirit of its founder, Dr Sushila Nayar, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences is committed..... > Grammaticality, it is correct to use the capital T in The Mahatma ...etc. as we are talking about one particular institute. If we say the students of ..etc. then we would use a smaller t. (The capital The in the name is also pronounced differently as Dee.) > 3. Underserved is better probably then underprivileged as some people in rural areas are well off and yet medical care is so inaccessible... > Underprivileged can include a plethora of things, and not only financial, as you are implying. Medical care is definitely a privilege. Kishore Shah 1974

Guest guest
Dear Kishore, Underprivileged has more negative connotations.......... " Underserved " exactly describes the problem. In America we get used to trying to be politically correct.....Underserved is the term they use here for areas that have less doctors / medical facilities etc etc As far as the capital T..........it struck to me as incorrect...........but you sound very confident...........so you might be right...........but it will look as a typo as most people might not be aware of this fine grammar rule...!! May be Mrs Gupta ( Dr O P Gupta ) can have the final word ! << Medical care is definitely a privilege.>> The whole point is that it should not become a " privilege " . Guest guest
Dear Ashok, Sorry for butting in... Please note, there is no such dictionary word (Underserved). But then, in the Americas they tend to use words and hope they will be included some day in their dictionaries! If you meant under-served, again, " to serve " does not imply a medical service. Serve goes more with religion, offices, etc. Underprivileged (or the underprivileged) - deprived of fundamental social rights and security through poverty, discrimination, etc. Obviously health is a fundamental social right. I personally feel underprivileged is okay (and it does not sound as bad as you make it)! :-) Ravin '82 Re: Re: Our Mission > Dear Kishore, > > Underprivileged has more negative connotations.......... > > " Underserved " exactly describes the problem. > > In America we get used to trying to be politically correct.....Underserved is the term they use here for areas that have less doctors / medical facilities etc etc > > As far as the capital T..........it struck to me as incorrect...........but you sound very confident...........so you might be right...........but it will look as a typo as most people might not be aware of this fine grammar rule...!! > > May be Mrs Gupta ( Dr O P Gupta ) can have the final word ! > > << Medical care is definitely a > privilege.>> > > The whole point is that it should not become a " privilege " . > > Ashok 1984
