Guest guest
I take meds for anxiety. And everything else, it seems *wry grin*. Usually they use SSRIs...though for autism they like to use Risperdal, which is an atypical antipsychotic (and sure knocked my anxiety out, but had some side effects I couldnt deal with. Like messing with my hormones. Im usually really reasonable about side effects, but lactating I will NOT live with). I cant take SSRIs because Im also bipolar. Other meds they use sometimes include benzodiazapines such as Valium and Klonopin, which are addictive and can aggrivate depressive tendancies (and which tend to not get along too well with autism for some reason), beta blockers like Tenex and clonodine, and occasionally anticonvulsants. The best antianxiety med for me is the anticonvulsant Neurontin. Ive been on about 16 meds so take this for what it's worth. If you need any other info on meds, I do study them for fun. Not a health professional, but I DO have the prescribing info sheets (not the little things they give you at the pharmacy, the real deal) for about 50 medications on my hard drive and know how to find just about any that you could possibly want. Guest guest
I am also starting to consider the use of antianxiety meds for my 8 year old. this past year she has been extremely anxious and although i believe it is related to things that are going on at school the possibility of medication is on my mind. The school issues are not going to resolve in the near future. Any thoughts, advice, appreciated Mom to Mac 8 yrs old Cornelia de Lange syndrome +pdd-nos > > Allie, age 5, takes 2.5mg/day of Paxil with great success. > > HTH, > Debi > > > > > > > > > Autism_in_Girls-subscribe > ------------------------ > Autism_in_Girls-unsubscribe > > > ________________________________ >

Guest guest
I know I keep repeating myself here, but I have been through the ringer with my 15 year old daughter. Ever since she started puberty (12 years old) she started engaging in SIB which then turned toward very severe aggression towards the adults in her life. She had major meltdowns with rages that came out of no where, eventually leading to me bringing her home from school to do home schooling. We tried different meds which only caused more problems and side effects. I researched the internet and talked to different parents on my lists and discovered some great information that changed my daughter's life for the better. Before embarking on the medication route, please check out " calming neurotransmitters " or " TMG and autism " on your search engine. You'd be surprised at the wealth of information about calming amino acids and what they can do. We started out with glycine...took about 2 weeks...and started seeing a reduction in her serious behavior. She was on this for about 6 months when I discovered TMG. I decided to switch to TMG when I read that it naturally raises serotonin levels in the brain, which in turn reduces aggression and rages. It only took 2 days to see the improvement in my daughter. This supplement and digestive enzymes have made a world of difference for her. My daughter is now back in school full time and doing well emotionally and behaviorally. We now only see problems when it's the full moon, changes in barometric pressure or when she ovulates and again, only minor behavioral issues. Good luck with your research and hopefully my daughter's story will help another child out there. Thanks for listening, Re: anti anxiety meds -My daughter is going on nine years old and is not on an antianxiety med at this time but we are getting ready to put her on one. When she gets severley anxious she gets agressive and has a panic attack as well keep us informed of what your doctor suggests for yours. Guest guest
Hi, I really appreciate the responses so far. Some of our concerns are -side effects of meds -whether the meds will be addicting and hard to give up if we get to that point. We are considering the meds because we are trying to start the transition to a mainstream class and she has been having a very hard time adjusting. Thanks again for the feedback Ed dad of Hfa 7 yr old girl.
Guest guest
Maybe you could explain why Allie responds to Paxil with decreased agression, but became more agressive with TMG? It's really baffling to me, lol. Maybe it was the extra methyl group, 'cause she's the hairiest little lovey you ever saw! Debi
Guest guest
I would also agree with Kassi that if the mainstream class is causing her emotional/behavior issues, maybe that is not the best class for her, so long as she's making adequate academic progress. If I could keep Allie at her old sped school for the rest of her life, a segregated school, I would have done it. She was so happy there. Guest guest
Maybe its not time for her to mainstream.Make sure that when you mainstream her its not all at once cause that could be very stressful for her.Wait on the medication untill you see if its the mainstream that is causing the issue. Most important talk to your daughter about how she feels about changeing classrooms this will make it alot eiser for you to understand whats going on with her.She has a voice and she definatly needs to know you are listening and care about how she feels. Guest guest
Hi Debi, Which type of TMG did you try? I used Source Naturals without the b12 and folinic acid and my did very well on it. I actually bought Kirkman's brand of TMG with the b12 and folinic acid and I'm still trying to figure out if it helps her better than the Source naturals. I only give her 1 capsule maybe 2 times a week now...she no longer needs it every day. Guest guest
It was kirkman's. She was doing good with DMG and then I decided to try TMG and it made her worse. I've tried it a couple of times with negative behaviors seeming to result. I've also tried inositol but it didn't seem to have any affect. Debi > Hi Debi, > Which type of TMG did you try?
