Guest guest
To be honest with you I did not take offence at all to that letter. First she was not comparing Autistics to calves, but simply making a very important point, that this country would first take notice of an animal epidemic before its own citizens' epidemic. Also, I do not know any parent who at FIRST did not have 1 or more of those emotions. Now I can see the beauty of my daughter's disorder but at first I questioned my religion, my God and myself. Now I thank God for everyday, and cannot imagine my life without her. But do not take those initial feelings away from people. It is normal and it does get better. It made me cry as well as my sisters. Now they can read what I was going through and was not able to put into words. Bridget Our Names Are Autism, Too Our Names Are Autism, Too excerpt: In her essay " My Name is Autism, " Marty , a 41 year-old, " high functioning " (by self-description) autistic woman describes what autism means to her. In a letter which frequently was circulated in conjunction with the " My Name is Autism " essay, Ms. , posing as a 25 year-old primarily non-verbal male, claimed to be speaking for all autistics (using such phrases as " those of us with autism would like an answer " and " we are all waiting for our answer " ). We, the undersigned, neither agree with Ms. 's conception of autism nor appreciate Ms. 's claim to be speaking for " those of us. " Please read the full text of our letter, " Our Names Are Autism, Too, " and the list of signatures of autistics and allies, available at http://www.isn.net/~jypsy/AuSpin/ournames.htm ________________________________ Ooops....Wrong Planet! Guest guest
Why not spend your energy on creating a letter for yourself, about how you feel. Even use the pronoun " we " . I am not sure what you are trying to say. Guest guest
I am one of those parents you have never met. We do exist. Autistics like myself and my kids' -- we have feelings too, why do we have to give up ours so you can have yours? And why does Marty have to pose as a non verbal 25 year old man to be heard by you? Because in fact she is much more like me and you don't like what I have to say? I am not alone.... You pay to hear the words of many signatories on that letter - listen to them now, hear them. -jypsy At 07:15 AM 4/7/2003 -0400, Bridget Buono wrote: >To be honest with you I did not take offence at all to that letter.
