I floss everyday and brush several times a day....what's up with the mouth sores? I've heard someone mention MTX and mouth sores. I've read the package insert and I'm not finding it. They hurt...I've used antiseptic mouth wash (with tears) and peroxide rinse??? Any suggestions would be soooo appreciated. Mouth and gum sores are a known side effect of MTX use. I do not know what percentage of people get them though. I have found that an ultrasonic toothbrush, flossing, and a mouthwash like Listerine help prevent MTX induced mouth sores. I have discovered 3 things that help immensely though... 1) Use a toothpaste that is SLS free ( sodium Laurel sulfate) -- a good one is Dentavite -- it is a fluoride toothpaste, and very minty (YUM!) but SLS tends to increase the frequency of sores. 2) for short term relief take a coffee filter and put it in a cup and pour some Mylanta (generic is fine) and let the liquid drain out of the filter (this may take a few hours to overnight). The paste that is remaining in the filter puts the fire out quickly, but your saliva will wash it away pretty quickly. 3) Last. but certainly not least, get your doctor to write you an RX for Triamcinilone 1% Orabase. It is a paste that will stick to the sore -- sores that normally would have lasted 2 weeks have disappeared within 2-3 days. This one is a true life saver! Hope this has helped!!! LOL I have been on MTX for 4 years and not gone bald yet, LOL, the drug works for me. My dose doubles on Tuesday to 20 mg. The folic acid did help me with the mouth sores but not so much with the hair loss. Has anyone else lost so much hair that they needed a wig, or shave, or scarf? I'm just curious. I want to be prepared for all possibilities.
