Dear all,

My daughter who is 14 has been eating paper and chewing ice which I understand

is due to an iron deficiency.

She has been on the GAPS diet for several years and has one liver meal per week.

Can anyone suggest anything else I can do to improve her iron levels?

Thank you.

Our nutritionist, who writes for the Autism File, recommended Floradix

Floravital for Iron deficiency - not to be taken too long term, however. Our

son, age 14 is the same. We took it for a while but it did not improve. We are

about to have his blood iron checked.

Hi ,

May I ask why the Floradix should not be taken too long term? We've been using Feraglobin and I'm just wondering whether the same caution should apply.

Many thanks,

Hi Alison

I did quite a lot of research into this when I was diagnosed with iron deficient

anaemia awhile ago, and attach the links below. Apolactoferrin is a great

supplement for lots of things, but should not be taken for iron deficient

anaemia. For this, you should only take lactoferrin. I use Laktoferrin by

Allergy Research Group.

For this link read down to the comments, specific comments from Life Extension

http://test.alchemistlab.com/wordpress/store/lactoferrin-apolactoferrin/

http://scientificliving.net/2011/04/treat-cancer-and-anemia-naturally-with-lacto\

ferrin/

Hope that helps. Other things I've been eating lots of are dried apricots and

home made hummous with lots of tahini. The biggest thing that's helped me feel

so much better is drinking raw milk, which naturally contains lactoferrin, and

lots of other great stuff. It's easily the best thing I've done for my health.

Hi /Alison,We have been using Jarrow's lactoferrin. It just says lactoferrin on the back not apolactoferrin do you know whether this helps of hinders anemia then? i think you said Jarrow contained apolactoferrin? DO you know any more about this - i had done quite a bit of looking into their product before using it and thought it would be beneficial but not so sure after what you've said.JanetTo: Autism-Biomedical-Europe From: canadacath@...Date: Wed, 5 Oct 2011 10:02:39 +0000Subject: Re: Iron deficiency

Antioxidants can raise iron levels if mercury toxicity is the reason iron is

low, according to Andy Cutler.

For more info, go to onibasu.com, tick " Autism-Mercury " and search for " iron "

and " andrewhallcutler. "

Hi Janet

If you read the comments in the first link I sent below, Jarrow has confirmed

that their product is apolactoferrin. I have spoken to Allergy Research Group

and they have confirmed that their product is lactoferrin. I buy the one with

colostrum which also has naturally occurring lactoferrin. I get it from

revital.co.uk. You can get it from i-herb cheaper if you can wait, it should be

just under the customs threshold. You can also get lactoferrin in whey protein,

red23 sells this and my kids tolerate it very well.

http://www.red23.co.uk/Vital-Whey-Natural-600g_p_75.html

And of course raw milk. Red23 also sell this from Jersey cows (A2 milk), it is

excellent. (I'm lucky to live close enough to the farm that sells it to buy

direct!)

The research is a bit conflicting, but it's not a cheap supplement and even Life

Extension says you shouldn't use apolactoferrin to raise iron levels, so

personally I wouldn't risk it.

Hope that helps

Hi ,Thanks for your info. - will stop using Jarrow then, wish they'd state what form lactoferrin they use. We have probs. with casein here so we can't use the raw milk. If we were to go onto the Allergy Research do you know whether we need an iron supplement in addition to this? DS has been taking the Jarrow and has not had any sniffles etc. so think it was helping his immunity, so worth considering the natural form from allergy research.Janet.To: Autism-Biomedical-Europe From: canadacath@...Date: Fri, 7 Oct 2011 09:50:54 +0000Subject: Re: Iron deficiency

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks so much for this information.  We were originally using the yasko version and I was trying to find UK sources to save on importing.  I think 'll go back to Yasko variety for Charlie as his iron levels were low.  For my daughter I think I;ll stick to life extension as she has had quite a few blood transfusions (has blood disorder) and has excess iron - although this is probably not available iron - I'll have to think about this more.

Thanks again for all you info - very helpful.BWAlison
