we are having the exact same problem here with the car rides! Tucker can't even sit up, sit in his car seat, bend over, climb stairs, sit on his play toys etc without him crying! Our car seat is reclined all the way back already so I'm stumped on what to do, we have never had this problem before! I think trimming it is probably the best idea if u ask me! Hello all,I must say thanks about the advice on the Kushies/plastic pants. Since our cast change a couple days ago they have saved us overnight twice now!!Isaiah's cast is much lower than his last and is anchored at the hips now which has made diapering a bit more challenging. The biggest problem we just found out today is i think the cast is putting pressure on his legs in his carseat. It doesnt seem to bother him in the stroller or short car rides so im not sure but on our 3 hr car ride today he cried. He never cries during car rides and when we checked his legs they had red marks. i wonder if its cutting off his circulation and giving him pins and needles feeling? I hate to go get the cast trimmed back in Dallas. Has anyone else experienced this and what did you do?? Could i lean the carseat back somehow or put towels under the cast to cusion it? Would that even work??Any advice?? Thanks!

We had this problem with 's last cast. Any car ride he would freak out. And of course changing his diaper. His was more about his hips. Upon removal of that cast it was close to being a sore on both hip bones. It does sound like it may need to be trimmed. Can he sit up in it? Or can you sit him up? When he does or you do is it cutting into his thighs? It does need to be pretty low, but he should still be able to sit up and it not dig where it is hurting him or cutting off circulation.Keep u posted. Tasha,

We can sit him up but it feels like it is laying on his upper thighs. Its not really digging, but left red marks where it left pressure after a 3 hr car ride. he can sit in the stroller fine...at least he did at ish the day he got it put on. Im afraid to get it trimmed cuz i dont want it to be too short or have rougher edges than it already does. We are driving for an hour tomorrow and we will see how he handles that. If he cries i may call Dr S nurse and see if they think it needs trimmed before we drive all the way back home. Ill let you know how it goes!

Thanks,

Hi ,

Our casts were always very low on the hips and that was a huge concern for us when we first started. Our PA in SLC told us to put blankets or towels under Noahs bum to raise him up a little. We did that ALL through casting. We bought 3 different car seats trying to fix the problem and nothing helped except the blankets. You will have to adjust the arm straps quite a bit as this will raise him up alot, but it stopped the pressure on his thighs. Now that he is in a brace, we do not have such an issue anymore. I totally feel for you, we drive 10 hours each way and that pressure would be terrible!!

Hope that helps,

P.S. The package finally went in the mail to you Thursday, sorry it took so long.

Ask your doc, but some people have been told they can gently pry it out with duckbilled (rounded) pliers a bit, or they can do it for you at the hospital. Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 4th cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 21)

Thanks so much!! For the package and the advice. i never thought of that! Lifting him bottom up would let him sit differently in the carseat so it would put less pressure on his legs. GREAT tip!! I will try that tomorrow and hope it works. We are 10 hrs from home now and had no idea how we would make it....

,I saw someone post about flaring the bottom of the cast. I totally forgot we did that as well with several times. My husband used plain old pliers and just barely flared it out. Thanks!

plastic pants and carseat help!!

Could i lean the carseat back somehow or put towels under the cast to cusion it? ,I'm sorry that I don't have any advice for you because we haven't had that problem. Hopefully, someone else will be able to help you out. The Carseat proved to be our biggest problem in our first cast. The recovery room nurse took us out and helped us fit in his carseat. He was just not fitting in it very well at all. She told us to purchase the Britax Marathon or Boulevard when we got home. They are very expensive, but when I placed him in it, it was as if it was made for the cast. The recline is perfect and stopped the cast from digging into his legs. I am not an expert, but can tell you it helped us!
