If these are pharmaceutical - the UK technical helpline for Circadin (2mg prolonged release) advised me that crushing would affect slow release. But probably best to ring and confirm on the product you are using. CSubject: Melatonin TabletsTo: Autism-Biomedical-Europe Date: Thursday, 8 September, 2011, 5:09

It will depend on the formulation - if the way it releases slowly is microencapsulation crushing will abolish the effect. I'm not sure why you would really want extended release - the natural timecourse is burst release shortly before sleep and gradual reduction in levels through the night, that's why the sublingual versions often work best because uptake is more rapid.Ken. Thank you Ken.

I gave half capsule with water but my son bit it and spat it out. So I had no

choice but to crush, was desperate for him to sleep before 11pm. So at 6.30 I

gave him the cruched tablet and by 8 it had worked like a charm, he was fast

asleep. Until 2am when he woke and didn't go back to sleep. I wonder if this

stops after a while?

6 hours of unbroken sleep is probably OK. You can always check his salivary melatonin levels to see if he has a normal pattern which might give you abetter idea of when is best to give it.KenSubject: Re: Melatonin TabletsTo: Autism-Biomedical-Europe Date: Friday, 9 September, 2011, 12:19
