My post went to my Junk mail (coming from my own email address!!!). Maybe that's why you missed too.

Actually, this cast has the shoulder straps, what we didn't put on was a soft collar that the Dr. was putting around his neck and connecting it to the cast with plaster and some fiber glass. The straps are unconfortable, but that thing is a lot worse.

I'm sure without the straps Hayden has to feel so much better, I think we can't do that since Liam's curve is really high (at shoulder blades level).

Thanks Joan!

I missed this post for some reason . I am so glad it went well. I totally understand what you mean about more freedom without the shoulder straps. Hayden does not have them this time either and he is much happier. Our Dr didn't think we were benefiting from shoulder straps since Hayden isn't getting much correction. So he decided to make it more comfortable for him. Keep us updated on numbers. Joanmom to Hayden 343 degrees down from 62Cast number 3Treated at ish Rite Hospital Dallas, TX

I missed it too. Dont you just love docs that look at the whole child and

not just the x-ray! Neck support is the worst....I know because Liv had

braces/casts with neck support from 3 to 8 yrs old. I also believe that

constant neck support may have aggravated a slight case of TMD..... Little

Hayden sounds so much more comfortable.....As not being able to open ones

mouth could be a bit frustrating! So glad you guys are home, comfortable

~AND~ have great numbers. Fingers crossed that he'll be sporting a brace

by summer.

Sincerely,

HRH

Thanks ... Something weird is happening to me. My own posts to CAST are going to junk mail.

Five years is a lot for neck support! (what is TMD?)

I know, for Liam to eat he kind of had to lift his head to open his mouth. He is making funny faces now, we think it's because he can open his mouth the normal way now lol

In our first cast, the Dr. got him down to 19 degrees IN CAST, and in cast # 2 and # 3 (with the neck support), he was able to get him down to 10. So obviously it works better. We might not get as good correction this time, but sometimes you have to go with some common sense. I'm glad the doctor listened to us.

I missed it too. Dont you just love docs that look at the whole child andnot just the x-ray! Neck support is the worst....I know because Liv hadbraces/casts with neck support from 3 to 8 yrs old. I also believe thatconstant neck support may have aggravated a slight case of TMD..... LittleHayden sounds so much more comfortable. ....As not being able to open onesmouth could be a bit frustrating! So glad you guys are home, comfortable~AND~ have great numbers. I have to say that our Dr always looks at overall child and not just xrays. Sometimes it frustrates me but I am confident he knows what he is doing. Joanmom to Hayden 343 degrees down from 62Cast number 3Treated at ish Rite Hospital Dallas, TX

WOW , I didn't realize he had a neck support all this time. He must be much happier. Joanmom to Hayden 343 degrees down from 62Cast number 3Treated at ish Rite Hospital Dallas, TX

So, another casting day is over. Liam got his 4th cast yesterday. It went well (with the usual crying and refusing to drink afterwards). We have no numbers this time, although the back looks better. I'm not sure about the rotation, but the curve is smaller for sure. I thought it had to be the other way around but we'll take any improvement. We'll get numbers in three or four weeks when we get an X-Ray after the cast is on for a while just to see how it's holding. We asked the doctor not to do the neck support this time (we've had it in the last two casts). We know it's best, but when we took the cast off we noticed that his neck muscles were too weak and it's taking him too long to recover. We don't want to cause the muscles to get too weak (his neck and trunk have always been weak). Thankfully, the doctor agreed that we have to look at the whole picture and didn't put it on.Even when Liam still has trouble looking up, he is

so much happier with this cast, it's not so restrictive and he can look to the sides and open his mouth. After having his neck supported for a while I'm sure his neck muscles are really tired now, but he is already doing better. It's also shorter and still anchored to his hips, so hopefully he can enjoy sitting again.Other than that, the day went well and they let us go home before he drank enough liquids because we said he woudn't do it until we got home, which is what happened. He doesn't understand that drinking is going to make his throat fell better, it HURTS to swallow, so he wont :-)Hopefully casting keeps working for us. We might take a brace break for the summer (we think in Liam's case it will be a good idea - we need to work on his trunk muscles).Liam, 4th cast, 40 degrees down to 10 IN 3rd cast____________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _Looking for the perfect gift?
