Hi :

Yikes, if Ethan's STARband looks at all similar to the way Abby's

fit, then I'd have to say it's not fitting him right. Especially if

you have yet to see any significan improvement after 3 mos time.

I decided to terminate her STARband treatment after the orthotist

added what was foot pad to her head. The orthotist did offer to re-

cast Abby for a 2nd STARband at no cost to us, but I didn't trust him

any more.

So I called Abby's ped. neuro, told him our situation and he wrote me

an RX for the DOCband. We contacted the clinic and had her casted

one week after her final STARband adjustment. We did receive a

refund for the STARband, only after we returned the band to the

clinic though.

PLEASE don't feel like an " idiot " for any of this! I too trusted

Abby's ortho, he was supposed to be the expert, not me! But I know

how you feel, I still beat myself up for not stopping her STARband

sooner than I did. But, hindsight

I'm very interested in seeing any pictures of Ethan in the band.

It's hard to say if the casting was made wrong, or the band was made

wrong at the factory, or if the orthotist made some bad

cuts/adjustmetns to the band. Abby's was very assymetrical from day

1, should've demanded a new band then (hindsight again!).

Did you have to change orthotists already.

Are you near any DOCband clinics?

Gosh, I'm sosososososo sorry to hear of your problems. How old is

Ethan now?

Debbie,

We have a new orthotist because we moved from Texas to Florida.

Ethan was four months when he was put into the band and now he is 7

months. We are going to see a neurosurgeon and a plastic surgeon on

the 20th so maybe they will recommend something. We have already

heard that they don't recommend the starband in the first place. The

closest CT clinic would be Atlanta. It wouldn't be too bad because

my entire family lives there. Let me know what you think of the

pictures.

Definitely post some pictures if you can. If you think it is not

right then follow up for sure! How much experience does your ortho

have with the STARband?

Marci,

I am not sure how much experience our new orthotist has with the

starband. He was recommended to us by orthomerica and they said that

they felt comfortable with us going to him. Our old orthotist who

did the casting and all of the major adjustments does like 70 a

year. I know that our new orthotist just got back from the weekend

seminar orthomerica did this weekend. I know that he hasn't done as

many as our first ortho. I am going to see what he says at the

appointment on Friday I guess.

Is it unusual not to have improvement after 3 mos? My orthotist told

me that one of his patients didn't show any improvement until her 5th

month in a band.

Yes, it is unusual to not have any improvement after 3 months!!

This is taken from the Cranial Tech web site:

How Quickly Can I See Changes:

In children under 5 months of age you should begin to see a change in

one week after wearing the band 23 hours a day.

In children under 12 months of age you should begin to see a change

in two weeks.

In children over 12 months of age, you should begin to see a change

within two to three weeks.

Age & Severity:

It is important to understand that the final outcome is affected by

the following:

Age at start of treatment:

The younger an infant, the faster the rate of head growth and

subsequent correction of the deformity.

Severity of condition:

As with any condition, the more severe the deformity the more

difficult the correction. It is essential to get the more severe

patient into treatment at a younger age.

My daughter got her second DOCband when she was 14 months old,we are

seeing some really nice correction!!

I would definitely be concerned if you haven't seen any improvement

yet. He was only 4 months when he was banded? Usually correction is

rapid at that age. Please keep us posted.

Wow- that's a shocker to me, personally. I would hate to have a band on that did not show improvement for that long of a time- where's the guarantee that it will work in 8 months? You know what I'm saying? It's just such a lot of time to lose if the helmet is not working properly, I would be on high alert. Keep him on his toes Sunny!

I asked the orthotist yesterday what kind of helmet that particular patient was in. He told me that it was "local helmet" so I'm assuming it was passive helmet. (He didn't make that clear to me when he showed me the pictures.)
