Guest guest Posted May 26, 2004 Report Share Posted May 26, 2004 CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! Awards I have to shout this to everyone I know! After a disastrous "honors" night last week in which my son (in Asperger's self-contained class in middle school mainstreamed for specials) was not even considered for high academic awards, tonight is the HIGHLIGHT of his school career so far!!!!!!!!!!! Tonight was the 6th grade band concert - the first one for the 6th graders. Not only did they sound awesome (remember, this is coming from a musician / music teacher, too!) but... Zack won a plaque for "Outstanding Contribution" to 6th grade band. They called him a ROLE MODEL and the ANCHOR of the low brass section (he plays the euphonium, a little tuba). Then he got a STANDING OVATION! He was one of 6 kids out of over 100 in the band who got an award! I was approached by parents and teachers I didn't even know congratulating me and him and saying how much their kids looked up to him! I was crying so hard and smiling so big! Just had to share. Will share pics too when they get developed. I've never been more proud. And to think that 3 years ago, he was placed in residential care because he was too violent and psychotic to attend even psychoed (self-contained school with no NT peers!). I want to take that plaque and rub it in Clayton County's noses! Zack will not let go of his award, either - he took it into the store when we went for icecream afterwards and I think only put it down to take a shower (which, gasp! he volunteered for tonight without being told or forced!)
