Dear SP Sir,

It is indeed a humbling thought that you consider me so high up on

your list. Are you sure that you want a zany and mad person's

suggestions? Then I am all game!

I shall definitely give my inputs. I'll come back to you after I have

seen the web site concerned.

Dear Sir (Dr. S. P. Kalantri),

I have just visited the temporary home page for the MGIMS web site - it is

nice and loads fast... the later is very important. You would not want

visitors to wait ages for the home page.

I think there is an excellent example on the web - www.yahoo.com. Very few

graphics, lots of links, news, humour, games and what not... but more

important - it loads fast and has new information everyday. Of course we

don't need all that stuff on our MGIMS web site...

(In this context I would like you to visit the Sony and Panasonic websites -

they have image maps, and/or huge graphics which are very slow to load even

on cable connection)

You could group visitors to the web site under different categories and

design the site to cover these categories...

1. Alumni - would probably want to learn about how to join the mailing list,

news about MGIMS, the MGIMS news letter, and would also want to contact

fellow alumni working at MGIMS (or at least get their physical contact

information).

2. Admission information seekers - should be able to get all the relevant

information on how to apply, where to send the application, what all

documentation to submit with the application, deadlines, travel information,

etc.

3. Staff recruitment - posts available, minimum qualifications, quotas, etc.

4. I strongly feel that there should also be an information database on

alumni and staff - addresses, email ID's, other contact information... that

could be presented as " tabular data " or as a DHTML document.

5. Please incorporate the Google Search engine on the home page (its free

and good).

Some of the above were addressed in the old website... but not

satisfactorily and not updated on a regular basis.

All the above links must be presented on the home page, and all other pages

that show up subsequently must be inter-linked. In that way when there is a

" direct request " for a certain page the visitor is able to navigate through

the rest of the website.

DIRECT REQUEST. For example, suppose I have saved the member's directory

page on my computer (or book-marked it), I must not need to go to the home

page to be able to navigate to the MGIMS news letter page.

That is about all I could think of immediately, I hope that is of some use,

me some institutional sites which could give us inputs for developing our

Dear Dr Kalantri,

I think the alumni page can be revamped into a much more interactive one. I

really loved the JIPMER alumni site. It records profiles of alumni, allows

people to search alumni by name, batch, speciality and even as couples! It has a

page for contributions by alumni, and a date wise record of the happenings (

deaths, additions to the family, achievements, campus happenings et al). There

are links to webpages of alumni. There are pictures of all the silver jubilee

celebrations. There's even a chatroom.

It will be worth a dekko. The site is not the offical www.jipmer.edu but

www.jipmer.org.

Please see how much of it can be feasible in our setup. Because it will

require a lot of work from the webmaster to regularly update the site, given our

very active alumni!

Anshu

Dear Anshu,

Thank you very much for these feedbacks. I would definitely visit JIPMER

alumni site and would try to use important features.

PS: Why not be an active member of the website team too. An open, informal

invitation!!

Dear Sir,

I have just visited the planned website for MGIMS. I think it is a big

improvement over the previous one.

In my opinion, websites must have two appealing characteristics.

One, as already pointed out, fast to upload.

The other, which I think the new site is achieved is " uncluttered " .

The only suggestion I colud give, is if possible when providing information

about faculty, their email addresses would be very welcome addition.

Dear sir,

Looked up the new website-does look far better than its predecessor. Its less

cluttered than the previous one and appears more promising. The Community

initiatives toolbar is a welcome addition- being the USP of our college. I

checked up a few other websites-notably CMC Vellore, and I thought the

suggestions below would be relevant in designing our website:

· An “archived photo library-thumbnailed and indexed”- that depicts defining

moments in MGIMS history beginning with the makeshift hospital of the 1930s.In

effect it would also be a photo album of behenji and her role in our hospital.

It could also include photos of the Sevagram ashram. I think Saranya`s

suggestion of a directory with phone nos. and e-mail IDs of all faculty members

is worth considering.

· We could have a “virtual tour” section comprising photos of the 4-5 depts of

MGIMS that stand out in aesthetic appeal-ICU, JBTDRC, the trauma center, the

pych. rehab center and probably the college entrance.

· A “news flash” icon that appears every few seconds-and opens up to display

events of interest- PMT Dates, results, national and international honours won

by students/staff in academic and extra academic fields.

· A well designed " alumni database " , that provides for immediate access and

allows for corrections, inclusions, and additions. CMC velore has a

multiparameter search facility-based on first name, last name or yr of joining

the batch . It would also be good if everybody could contribute batchwise all

the e-mail IDs and if possible of their res.addresses of their respective

batches so that a database can be created.

· The mgims newsletters on the site can be maintained upto date. In addition

they can be mass e-mailed to all the addresses in the database.

· Lastly I think we could have an “Editor`s corner”, where you could select

interesting articles from the journals/media once in 2-3 months of medical /non

medical importance that you feel deserve attention.

Sir, I know many of the above ideas would not be feasible due to constraints of

webspace, finance or sheer impracticality! All the same, I m sure that our

website will beat those of most other Indian medical colleges when itz finally

out!

events of interest- PMT Dates, results, national and international honours won

by students/staff in academic and extra academic fields.

All the same, I m sure that our

website will beat those of most other Indian medical colleges when itz finally

out!

Dear Ramprakash,

Thanks a lot for your very useful feedback. Yesterday I pulled up an old foxpro

file that contained batchwise list (including addresses) of MGIMS alumni from

1969 to 2003 (about 1680, couldn't trace the missing ones) and converted foxpro

into excel spreadsheet. I mailed it to the webmaster who should upload it on the

site soon.

I am happy to receive feedbacks from several alumni and e-group members, and

would surely incorporate them in the development of website.

Needless to say,I look forward to reading more feedbacks. More the merrier.

Dear sir,

Reg the website, a few more suggestions:

1)when you prepare the address database, the addresses you have may

have got outdated by now. Similarly girls have got married and many

students have settled abroad. I suggest a system on the lines below

for students to update their address profiles:

a)enter your batch no(4 digits)+roll no.(2 digits).

b)the display will show:the existing record is as follows:

· NAME

· MAIDEN NAME(girls)

· BIRTHDAY

· E-MAIL ID

· Present address with country of residence

· Tel no.

· Permanent address(here the pre existing address at the time

of admission may be entered by you acc to admission records-can be

edited by the alumni if needed).

· Further information of interest to be entered by the alumni

(names of spouse and children, anniversary date, present place of

work and designation).

SUBMIT INFORMATION/CANCEL

2) if you intend to put up an archive photo section or a behenji

section, it would be nice if the hum alone (not the chant )of the

FIRST 3-4 LINES of the Vaishnava janato …assuming that it was her

fav. bhajan, could be played softly (preferably just Once) so that

it can waft along when the section is opened.

3)reg the background of the website wud it be gud if we could have a

fine khadi texture in a light yellow/beige background? There are a

lot of innovative background designs nowadays, could it be somehow

blended into our website?

Ramprakash

an old foxpro file that contained batchwise list (including

addresses) of MGIMS alumni from 1969 to 2003 (about 1680, couldn't

trace the missing ones) and converted foxpro into excel spreadsheet.

I mailed it to the webmaster who should upload it on the site soon.

Dear SP Sir,

I was wondering,if it was possible to incorporate a link

for supporting/funding any the institutional/departmental projects

for the people who want to donate the gift of.......tan/man/dhan,the

last one being the most important of all!You never know one day

while surfing on the net,if Bill Gates decides to do a major

makeover change for our Institute, atleast he should know how to go

about it,before he changes his mind!!.......:))

Another point,.......to give our institute a better chance

for being listed on the top of all search engines, consider

incorporating words like..........medicine,research,medical

education, etc etc(can't come up with anything better) in the URL!!

With best regards,
