Guest guest
Chris I'm interested in trying inositol for my son, who has borderline aspergers along with what appears to be a combo of TS and OCD. I've always been reluctant to go the drug route and we seem to be inching closer. First I'd like to try this inositol stuff. However, we have been giving him something called Nuthera, with P5P, which is primarily B vitamin, along with Omega 3. I have two questions that I'm hoping you or someone else could help me with. Do you think adding inositol would be too much B? And is inositol something you find at a health food place? Thanks! kim

Guest guest
Kim, I know inositol is fine with the omega3, I would think fine with the rest too. I know you don't take it if you're on lithium, and they say to cut back/stop on caffeine. That's all from Dr. Penzel's article on it: http://www.homestead.com/westsuffolkpsych/Inositol_and_OCD.html Shouldn't be taken if bipolar (from what I've read, all reading/hearsay). So far as tics, I'd just keep an eye on it, don't know if it benefits, does nothing for them, or might affect them. The health food/vitamin places can be pretty expensive for the powder, plus it was hard to find. We ordered ours online from iHerb.com (we got the Source Naturals Brand). Others here have found other online places with lower/reasonable prices. We went by the dosage amounts for beginning in Penzel's article, though the measurement per 1/4 tsp differed on our inositol brand than in the article so didn't " quite " follow it. I worked on up to around 13-14 grams and decided to give him a good 12 week trial on it. This was all just after all this 24/7 OCD nightmare began. I recall he seemed to get a bit worse and worried but remembered that many here said that on the prescription meds, you can tend to get worse at first (and that means the med might just work great) so waited it out and then began getting some relief. I know that one parent here saw positive results a lot sooner (can't recall who). Also, if you have time to go thru the archives here, look for notes from (search for by using LMB558 as her email begins with that), she used some alternative things for her son that you might want to check out. Which reminds me - the inositol activated her son a bit too much, so she dropped it and used other alternatives. Well, this might be a bit jumbled, just checking in here from work between tasks! Feel free to ask anything here or email me privately! > Chris > I'm interested in trying inositol for my son, who has borderline aspergers > along with what appears to be a combo of TS and OCD. It's really important to take into account that " natural " supplements affect the brain just as prescription medications do. Inositol affects the serotonin levels in the brain, as does Zoloft, and adding the two together could be very dangerous if your child is taking a high level of Zoloft and you add a significant amount of inositol. I know I'm always preaching about this, but I think it's better to be safe than sorry! in NV
Guest guest
Kim: Inositol was in our health food store, in a powder form. You mix it in juice or whatever. I am planning on augmenting Zoloft with it, if I can get the doctor's ok. I suppose I don't really need his OK as it is not actually medicine. How have you liked the Nuthera and what issues has it helped? Let us know your results! Guest guest
Hi , a thought on augmenting with inositol, couldn't quite tell from your note, but *do* let your doctor know you are using it as it does affect things and if anything changes good or bad, he'll want to know what all your child is on (just like with herbs, vitamins, etc., and also taking prescription meds). As you said, you don't need his OK but just let him know. I figured you would, but just making sure. > Kim: > > Inositol was in our health food store, in a powder form.
