Guest guest
You are at a tough time especially if your child has been home up until now (like mine). We started in early spring with special ed preschool and let it be known from the very first meeting that we expected extended school year services. Start early on this. We decided that the services should be provided at the same school he had been in and would be at in the fall to ease the transitions some. I think you have gotten some good advice already about this. I second the home/school journal and I have found that it is very educational just to take and pick up your child from school if you can. I learn so much just from that little bit of time spent and they get to know you a little. Volunteer all that you can. My son's first three years were pretty difficult because he was difficult mostly but even if things didn't look too smooth I could tell when he was being treated well. He also had limited language but he amazed me one day in his second year of Pre-K by telling me that one teacher he had was not kind. And he was right. This was way beyond what he was usually able to express. Even if things aren't perfect it will be alright. You may learn some things that help the next school year get off to a better start. Hope this helps. > From: MysticTavern@... > Reply-To: autism-georgia > Date: Tue, 13 Jan 2004 01:29:23 -0500 > To: autism-georgia > Subject: Worries Preschool PDD kiddo > > My son now 2 and a half is suppose to start special education preschool > when he turns 3.I am worried because he still has very little speech and > should I be about how they may treat him?Since he can't tell me > anything. He'll turn 3 right before school lets out and was thinking if > everything goes well it is better to get him in sooner than later, but I > am worried what if it doesn't go all well...And If it does go well is > there a chance of him getting the extended services through the > summertime...What do y'all think should I just wait 'till the end of the > school year or the next school year....I know he needs social interaction > I'm just confused about what to do.Not familiar with all of this...If > you do please speak up(: > > > ________________________________________________________________ > The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! > Surf the web up to FIVE TIMES FASTER! > Only $14.95/ month - visit www.juno.com to sign up today! > > > >

Guest guest
My son, Owen, just turned 3 on 12/29 and started special needs preschool on 1/6. He absolutely loves it. After a few days he almost flies out of the car in the morning and loves riding the bus to grandma's at Noon. I was worried, too, since he doesn't communicate well and is still in diapers, but they are great with him and I think the structured program is wonderful for him. The teacher at Owen's school is really on the ball. I observed the class by myself before he started, as well as visited with Owen one day. Owen goes to Tritt in Cobb Co. I was told there is a summer school program for 6 weeks and that he would be evaluated for that later, so even if your son is starting toward the end of school, maybe he can go to the summer program? good luck!
