Guest guest
Kim, so sorry to hear you are so ill. I am only speaking from what I was told here, so don't quote me. I think you may have gotten so ill from taking the methadone with the pain meds; in some cases methadone is used to get people off of heavy narcotics such as oxycontin. I have a friend back home that is a chronic pain sufferer and was hooked really bad on oxycontin. His doctor finally quit prescribing the oxycontin and put him on methadone. He warned him that if he still tried to take oxycontin with the methadone, it would possibly make him have side effects such as you described. I also watched a show on the Discovery Health channel about a guy who was hooked on Oxycontin, and after he went through a new technique where they anesthetized (sp) him and did a " brain flush " (I can't remember what they called it) on him, he was prescribed methadone to keep him from using oxycontin again. It said that with the methadone, if he tried to use any narcotics, he would become very sick. You may want to call your Doc. and ask about this. I may be wrong, Kim, this is just what I have heard. I hope you feel better soon and they get your meds figured out. Hugs and smiles..... Traci > > Dear Fellow Stilligans, > > Hello All! I hope everyone is doing well. I only have a minute to type as I am very ill and can't sit up for long. I just got out of the hospital yesterday. My medications were switched around. In the hospital I took my Prednisone and epam when I first woke (so I could move) and then at around 10:00 a.m. I took the rest of my morning meds. However, when I was discharged they said to go ahead and take them all when I first wake…that the only reason they gave me the other Prednisone and the epam first thing was because I rang the nurse bell and asked for them because I couldn't move. They didn't want to give me the shot to bind the narcotics because I would end up in really bad pain. So they hooked me up to all kinds of monitors and watched me for the day. I was eventually discharged and advised not to take the epam at all. They said I had a reaction to the combination of the epam and methadone. > > Has anyone else experienced this? Guest guest
Traci, Thank you for the reply. I really need some help with understanding this...But I'm not taking Oxycontin anymore....or percocet (oxycod). The doctors took me off of both (Oxycontin and Oxycod) because they forsee me being on pain meds for an indefininte amount of time BUT they did not take me off valuim, which I understand is a narcotic....so maybe that's why I'm feeling so badly???? and I'm also wondering if it will take my body a while to adjust to the change? I don't know why I'd be so sick on this Methodone and not sick on the Oxy's...they took away the pain most of the time...unless in a bad flare....but didn't make me " high " or sick. Puzzling. Guest guest
Dont fear the methadone to much for the sake of what it is used for in the typical forum (heroin addiction). It is also used as a pain medication. It does sound as if you do need to consult with the prescribing physician regarding any interactions of the medications that your taking however. Methadone is a much stronger medication than that which you were on previously, so it does sound as if you may have been overdosed. Better call your doctor tomorrow and clear things up with your meds. LOve, K

Guest guest
Dear Kim, I wish you were not experiencing so many problems. I pray that you can get on the med cocktail that will work for you. You are definitely long over due for a remission. I am so glad that you came out of this alright. I have been worried about you and I have missed you. I think you may have had a bad or allergic reaction to one of your meds or maybe to one of your meds when it was combined with another med. I wonder if maybe one or some of the meds when taken together if they made the meds stronger. I have had adverse reactions to Amytriptiline and epam. I had to stop taking both of these meds. The Amytriptiline made me feel so groggy, disoriented, my balance was off, I had trouble concentrating and focusing. These reactions would last most of the day even though I took the Amytriptiline the night before. The epam gave me bad nightmares, I was incoherent and believe it or not I actually had Hallucinations while on this med. Again I took one pill before bedtime and the effects lasted well in to the next day. I was prescribed both meds to help me sleep and both of them made it more difficult for me to sleep. I wonder if anyone else has had similar adverse effects from these meds. I agree with Kathi. about not being alarmed about being on the Methadone. I know a lot of people take this for Chronic Pain. I think unfortunately a lot of people may have some preconceived notions about this med that are not true. I am sure these come from the fact that Methadone is also prescribed to people who have Chemical Dependency or Addiction problems. My own opinion is that when you start new meds they should be introduced gradually and only one new med at a time if at all possible. I don't think that all possible adverse reactions to meds could possibly be known and especially when combined with other meds. I sometimes believe Doc's freely prescribe new meds without considering that our bodies need to adjust to them and especially when more than one med is introduced at a time. Plus they may not always know that one med might adversely effect another. In reality it probably isn't possible for the Doc's to know all of this offhand. However I still think that they should take the ut most care when prescribing any meds. In a lot of cases it seems the Pharmacist knows more about the meds than the Doc's. I apologize for going on and on I know your ill and I am sure your not up to reading lengthy emails. I sometimes go on these tangents and I find it hard to stop. You should definitely contact your regular Doc's as soon as possible if you haven't already done so. I truly wish you didn't have to go through such an ordeal I am however so happy you are okay. It sounds like you were in real danger. You will definitely be in my thoughts and prayers. I hope that your Doc's will figure out the best meds for you to be on as soon as possible. I know your very ill right now so please take good care of yourself. When you feel up to it let us know what happens. If I can do anything please let me know. Feel free to call me anytime if you need someone to talk to or to listen. My number is I am on Ak time. Love, jatw@...
