" Cutting " is self-mutilation, most frequently done on the arms with a razor

blade . . . Puts mothers into panic mode. . . .

My daughter tells me it " made everything stop " for a while. She is in so

much mental and emotional turmoil, and says she constantly has songs

repeating over and over in her mind (etc. -- lots of brain " noise " and

activity) and that cutting her arms gave her something else to focus on. I

believe it, for her, is a way to release internal pain -- a coping

mechanism, related to the depression, that's a result of OCD issues

worsening . . . . and 'round and 'round and 'round.

But for whatever reason it's done, it's scarey as hell, isn't it?

Dawn, my heart goes out to you, too. Some days MY life is overwhelming with

all this -- I can't even imagine what our children are going through.

OCD but a symptom of a more serious mental illness. It can be associated

with multiple disorders but I know of it being related to bipolar disorder.

was cutting himself (to the point of making permanent scars and possibly

infecting himself with a dirty knife) because he was so severely depressed

that he couldn't feel anything. At least the cutting was pain and he could

deal with the pain because it was real and nothing else felt real.

his psychiatrist. It is apparently quite common in mental illness but not

in OCD. Cutting and suicide do not always go hand in hand but they can.

Please watch her closely.
