Guest guest
Patty,Thank you!! I got a bit scared yesterday, because the coughing/pulled muscles from it made me feel hunched over and I was short of breath, like I couldn't get enough air in, I had a slight wheeze/low rattle in my chest. With Bex coughing, but not nearly as much as me, I was worried he'd get really sick in the new cast- he can't get a chest X-ray because our casts have metal staples. Luckily I went to the grown up doc today and he diagnosed bronchitis, not pneumonia. I have an inhaler and cough syrup with codeine, which I know Bex cannot have! : )I hope this helps someone else, because this cough is really going around, I heard it in SLC last week, as well as here in L.A. I had only a one degree fever, so very low grade, but the cough can be deceiving.Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years 7 mos. old, in 6th cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 25)To: infantile_scoliosis Sent: Tue, February 23, 2010 9:28:47 AMSubject: Re: 1st Cast postponed.... Heidi,I don't know a whole lot but pneumonia can be much more serious and if you suspect it, I'd suggest a trip to the doctor. In pneumonia, there is usually a high fever and with bronchitis it is usually low grade. With 2 of my kids, I would've never realized they had pneumonia if it hadn't been for the 105 fever they got which put them in the ER. Guest guest
Hang in there momma! Im glad you have a diagnosis and treatment plan. Is Bex still coughing a lot? I hope your fever has subsided. Shoot, if I even get a fever of 99.5 I am laid out. Liv gets a 103 fever and says, Im alright mom.... They are so much more resilient than us. Fun with age.
Guest guest
Seriously, Bex is really handling this virus better than me! I am so grateful for his strong immune system. He gets sick but bounces back quickly and just keeps going! We found jagged rocks down the back of his new cast. Never a dull moment! One came out of the bottom of the cast at the park yesterday! The other Dad there thought we were nuts.Dr. D asked us for some front photos of Bex's current cast to use at the American Association of Orthopedics and Orthotics meeting this week (Hope I got that name right). So Bex is a teaching tool! They have to legally put a black strip over his eyes in the pics shown- my sister joked it's like Glamour dos and don'ts- DON'T wear that pull up diaper with that black cast! : ) By the way, our 3 year of niece Isadora made it through her hip dysplasia surgery and is in a pink spica cast from her chest to her feet for 6 weeks. She's doing really well. We are a true cast family. A great gift in the hospital room are mylar ballons with the child's fav characters- "walking" Elmo is a big hit for Izzie. No latex balloons allowed because of latex allergies in the hosp.- I didn't know your Mom passed away from pnuemonia. Wow, I'm so sorry. It is something to be taken very seriously.I'm coughing a lot less now, these darn pulled muscles hurt when I pick the kiddo up or cough, or turn in bed...ouch. Guest guest
Yeah, Patty, I don't think I've ever had this and I think I'll remember it, too, at night around 10pm I start "huffing", kind of dry heaving for breath. I go to bed right away on my left side with a humidifier on and it goes away as soon as I do. In the morning it's better. Weird! Guest guest
Yeah, Patty, I don't think I've ever had this and I think I'll remember it, too, at night around 10pm I start "huffing", kind of dry heaving for breath. I go to bed right away on my left side with a humidifier on and it goes away as soon as I do. In the morning it's better. Weird! I was pretty confident for you that it was bronchitis. Yea, now you can start the road to recovery!!! I had bronchitis about 15 years ago and I will never forget the way that I coughed... losing my breath b/c I couldn't stop! Hang in there and get better soon!
