Guest guest
I didn't start anti-depressants till after I started tx but that's not a good idea because you have to find the one that will work. It took a year and a half to find one that I was able to tolerate. I agree will taking the anti-depressant while on tx. and don't be so confidential when talking to the Dr. your hubby might not realize the bear he can turn into on tx. It might be a good thing for you guys to talk about now before it gets like at my house while I was on tx. When I came in the front door most of my family went out the back door. My chillins(Children for the yankees) spent so much time at grandmas I forgot what they looked like. There were many times that my darling wife wanted to kill me, but we talked, and cried a lot together and by ourselves because of the mood swings I had. But she still loves me, I think. Guest guest
Good Morning Jody YES, that is a very typical problem on treatment. I am quite surprised frankly that his doc did not put him on an ssri antidepressant BEFORE he started tx. Its a very well known fact that Interferon depletes the brain of seretonin and THAT CAN cause major changes in mood, increasing depression and cause insomnia. Please ask his doctor for an ssri such as prozac, paxil, celexa or lexapro. Im sure there are more than just these but these are the ones that come to mind this morning. Wellbutrin is for dopamine and while it may be helpful for depression, its not usually helpful for THIS kind of depression caused by Interferon Tx. Riba pills also can cause mood swings and what we call "riba rage".PLEASE talk with his doc and also PLEASE KNOW that this is not him,,, its the medication... and quite common while on tx especially IF not treated. There is no reason for him to have to continue feeling so awful even if he wont admit that he feels bad, I know he does. You are a wonderful wife and he is quite lucky to have such a wonderful wife who would take the time to find out about this stuff and try to help him. I was also blessed with a wonderful husband who made it possible for me to complete tx and actually make SVR ( sustained viral response).. Please ask his doc for meds to treat the side effects, there is no reason that he needs to suffer.. and YOU need to know that he will probably need something for sleep, anxiety, something for depression, possibly better pain control for the body aches and if he gets anemic, he needs procrit and neupogen for red and white cells should he become low in those. I am no doc but from what I understand, IF his hemoglobin drops 2 points, then he needs procrit.. so if his hemoglobin is say 14 and it drops below 12, then he will notice the fatigue and will probably need procrit. I am telling you this because many doc's who treat hep c, dont have a clue.. We have lots of experience here on this forum and we can help you to prepare for this and to help you help your husband. Many times the doc immediately want to lower med doses when one gets anemic and THAT reduces his chances of sustaining a response.. so instead of lowering the dose, he should be given procrit,, etc, and the doc would need to use the code for chemo induced anemia because most insurance wont pay for the procrit for anemia caused by Hep c treatment.. little things like this that we can help you with. Good luck hon and thanks for asking those questions for your hubby and once again, welcome to the forum... maybe you can get him to come here too!! hugs jax moderatorjobotopher wrote: I'm new to this Hep C stuff as my husband started weekly interferon shots 3 weeks ago with daily rib. Guest guest
Hi Jody! And a Big WElCOME to ya! Yes the need for an anti-depressant or an anti-anxiety tranquilizer is very common during Tx (treatment) for Hep C. However, many, especially men, may try to be " macho " and " think " they dont need it. If one can get by without taking anything and still get thru Tx, than that is the best way to go, however one should not suffer during this tough Tx and one should never stop Tx because they cant handle what its doing to thier mind: i.e. heavy duty blues and crying depression or high anxiety (which is also a form of depression). Maybe your Husband should read this too (hopefully he will become active with us too). The Tx meds definitely mess us the Seritonen which is a naturally occuring chemical in the brain. So yes, it is the Tx that is causing this FOR SURE! When this happens many take an " SSRI " type of Anti Depressant (AD) all thru Tx and that solves the problem. One needs to get on one fairly soon as they take a while to reach full effect and the doses may need to be adjusted during Tx. For the best results see if there is a Psych team working with his Liver Dr. or one they can send him to pronto. Always run everything by your Liver dr during Tx not your PCP, your Liver Dr needs to know whats going on at all times. That being said, many Liver Drs now prescribe the SSRI ADs themselves, but they need to know the full range of his probs since there are different SSRI AD's for different mood swings, again the dey is the SSRI family of ADs. Tell your husband that, me, a Guy (!) who never ever took any meds like this before Tx, went on them too. I didnt have the blues and crying Depression like most get (about 80%), I had very HIGH ANXIETY, something I never experienced before and hope to never experience again! I luckily got on an SSRI AD used to treat that type of Depression the very first week. I couldnt have made it thru Tx without it. I also took/take Ativan which is a mild tranq to take the edge off as needed. I am now 3 years Post Tx and Virus Undetected (take a look at my profile for more info). If hes having troubles and would like to talk to another dude, feel free to email me your number and I'll be very happy to call. I hope you can get him to agree to that, cuz it will help alot just to talk to someone else. OK thats a lot of info for now. Hope this helps some. YOU TAKE CARE! We will ALL be here for BOTH OF YOU!! Guest guest
It is almost a customary practice for doctors to prescribe antidepressants before starting a patient on treatment . So if your hubby is having episodes of depression maybe he should be on one . If you need support during your husbands treatment , this is the place to find it . We have members on treatment (like myself) and members whose spouses are dealing with the virus .. 2 Questions: Depression/Interferon & Spousal Support I'm new to this Hep C stuff as my husband started weekly interferon shots 3 weeks ago with daily rib. Guest guest
I haven't found an ssri that I can tolerate. They make me anxious and angry. But I've been doing some reading, and I'm taking in to my shrink today, some research suggesting supporting the tryptophan which is precursor to the serotonin. The serotonin is actually an antagonist to the INF, and can therefore reduce the effectiveness of the IFN. At least according to the research I read on medline today. Guest guest
Well good luck with the "Juice". Wish you the best Eddie RE: 2 Questions: Depression/Interferon & Spousal Support Hi Eddie, Wellbutrin doesn't cause me anxiety problems, the ssris do, like prozac and lexapro. But I'm weird anyway.
The combo script is being transmitted today. I should be on the juice within a couple weeks, at the most. The anxiety attacks were horrible. The last time I was in the hospital during tx and they were checking me out the Dr. had them give me Welbutin or and within 15 minutes I was a basket case. So I know first hand how they will bring on anxiety attacks. Guest guest
Yes, we all notice total changes in our spouses on Interferon and Riba, we dealt with it through a Phyciatrist(sp). We see him every 4-6 weeks, and yes my husband takes anti-despressants, they are a God send. Peg/Interferon is a tough drug along with the Riba. It makes a person totally different. See someone and talk to your best friend about his moods, it isn't easy. Anti-depressants bring back that person you really love and you know is in there somewhere. It isn't easy....good luck. sodapop_4you wrote: Yes it is typical for one to take anti depressants during treatmentMy husband and i both have hep c We werent together when he did treatment..He was my care taker during my treatment...Take care Jody>> > I'm new to this Hep C stuff as my husband started weekly interferon > shots 3 weeks ago with daily rib. Guest guest
Some of us can be bugger bears on treatment. Heck lets be honest. We can be a pain in the keister. I know that myself, while on treatment, although I tried to keep a stiff upper lip and all that rot. At times I was a whiny, tantrum throwing baby. Thank God for anti-depressants, a spouse who gave me room to get out of the way. A doctor who warned my husband there would be days like this. And some good cd with soothing music. Honey, those of us who have been through treatment we salute you as a caregiver. Because believe me without my husband as my caregiver, who could walk on eggshells when he had to. I would not have made it.Please have your husband take to the doctor about anti-depressants. And remember when he gets into those moods, give him lots of space, a quiet place to retreat to. That worked well for me.LoveJanet> >> > > > I'm new to this Hep C stuff as my husband started weekly > interferon > > shots 3 weeks ago with daily rib. (?) pills.
