Subject: Action Alert: Mothers March Against Mercury Resent- Resent-To: True , , Rita Kilpatrick Resent-Date: Tue, 20 Apr 2004 14:24:07 -0400 Action Alert from Southern Alliance for Clean Energy Please join us for the Mothers March Against Mercury When: Saturday, May 8, 2004 (rain or shine) March will begin at 12 noon. Press conference will be held at 1 p.m. Where: Centennial Olympic Park Marchers should gather at the corner of Marietta Street and Centennial Olympic Park Drive- across from Philips Arena and the CNN Center. We will march to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's regional offices at 61 Forsyth Street SW, for the press conference. What to Bring: Posters and banners! Background: Mercury is a dangerous toxic metal that can cause severe neurological and developmental problems in unborn fetuses and very young children whose brains are still developing. People are exposed to mercury mainly by eating fish. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and 43 states have issued advisories warning people, especially women and children, to avoid or limit eating local fish because of mercury. But even with these warnings, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 1 out of 6 women of child bearing age in the U.S. have unsafe levels of mercury in their blood due to fish consumption. The best way to protect women and children from mercury is to eliminate it from its largest industrial source: power plants. After years of work by public advocates across the country, the EPA is now under a deadline to reduce the dangers of mercury from power plants. EPA's proposal falls short of what is possible and what is needed to reduce mercury contamination. The proposal could even allow some power plants to actually increase their mercury emissions. EPA needs to require all power plants to install Maximum Available Control Technologies (MACT) so that all our communities have a cleaner, safer environment. The technology is available to reduce mercury pollution by up to 90% from power plants. All other major industrial emitters of mercury have been required to reduce their mercury emissions. This is your chance to show the Bush administration that they should act without further delay to protect our families from mercury pollution! Join us for the Mothers March Against Mercury on Saturday, May 8.
