Guest guest
Amy, Max has never had the blisters but I have heard lots of moms say that they used Aquaphor to help. Also, Max has NEVER had full range of motion in his shoulders in any of his casts. I have mentioned it to Chicago before and they were not concerned. Max does not even like me to lift his head up above his heads because it is uncomfortable. If you are really concerned about these issues call and pick 's brain! She would be more than happy to talk to you and ask Dr. S for his opinion! Cara Mom to Max 2 1/2 years old Chicago Shriners In Cast #4 0 in cast, 24 out of cast > > Hi guys. Makenna has been in her cast for a little over one week. She is starting to develop a blister on her left hip. What do I do? I put neosporin and a bandaid on the spot. I think it is from the seam of the pull ups, so I put a regular diaper on her and didn't put it under the cast on that side. Any other suggestions? > Also, I am just now noticing that under her right arm is cut pretty high and she can't put her arm down by her side. She can put her other arm all the way down to her side. I pulled some of the tape off and tried to pull the padding a little tighter and closer to the edge of the actual cast, and that seemed to help a teeny bit. I didn't work at it very long...I'd already messed with her hip, so she was kind of done with me messing with her. I will work on it some more tomorrow. It doesn't seem to bother her, but I worry about her spending three months without full range of motion in her shoulder. If it needs to be trimmed, do I have to go back to Chicago? > Thanks for your insight! > > Amy, mom to Makenna, 2.5 years. > In 1st cast from Chicago (11/3/9) >
Guest guest
Amy, Joan gave you great advice. Try the aquafor on the rub spots and the bandaid. And definately petal the sides with more moleskin. That should help. As far as the arm thing, i wouldnt dig in the cast to mess with the padding, just call your doc's nurse Monday and get their insight. Best of luck! Guest guest
Thanks for the advice. I will call Monday and ask about the arm, I hadn't thought about it being intentional or purposeful. Makenna was not the most cooperative patient while they were taping the edges. They apprecatied her keeping them on their toes as they hadn't had 'a moving target'in awhile!. So I thought it just might not have gotten wrapped all the way down to the edge of the cast. I just put some aquaphor on her hip too. Won't adding the moleskin just add more thickness to the area and cause more rubbing? I haven't actually seen any, they are sending me some. Thanks again! Guest guest
Hi Amy, Finn has had the same isssues with blisters on the hip. First I try to put a blister bandage on it. (change it everyday so it does not "stick")If they did not resolve the issue I would trim just a bit and place a wound patch over the area. The wound patch was only when it was really bad. Sometimes the cast will start to come up very high over Finn's shoulder. First I gently hold him upside down with my husband's assistance and try to shift the cast into place, If that doesn't work I will pull the padding out of the arm area and try to make it a bit looser. My last fix is to then trim a tiny small amount from under the arm. Hope that will help. To: infantile_scoliosis Sent: Fri, November 13, 2009 9:26:10 PMSubject: Cast questions Hi guys. Guest guest
Amy, The moleskin you would want to add on the hip where it is rubbing and causing the blister. It may make it slightly thicker there but it will act like a cusion and will help protect the skin form the rough area on the cast. Give it a try. Its all about trial and error! Good Luck and let us know if you have any more questions! Subject: Re: Cast questionsTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Friday, November 13, 2009, 9:30 PM Thanks for the advice. Guest guest
Bexon always has slight redness at his hip skin, which goes away once he stops jumping and running around- like when he sleeps. Joan's advice is right, the most importnat thing is not to allow infection. We are happy with Weleda Baby Calendula cream for the rubbing, it really helps Bex, but Aquaphor is preferred by some Moms. Blister band-aids are a good idea- could a young baby eat them if they came off? I'm forever thinking about choking hazzards. Guest guest
Heidi, I worry about choking hazards too. My son has a habit of actually picking at the moleskin until it sheds and then he puts it into his mouth. Freaks me out that he will choke on it! Not to mention gross! Guest guest
Hi Amy, In all of Noelle's casts one side was higher than the other. If it's really bad I would call your casting doc and see what they think.... It's possible that you might be able to go to a local ortho or your local hospital for a trim under the direction of your casting doc. Keep in mind that as your child grows, that issue will probably go away as she gets taller. I used to put aquaphor on Noelle's red/chafed areas and that usually worked. If it's really a pressure sore extra padding directly to the area may not help as it could add additional pressure to that area..... You could try something like a bunion pad which will cushion the area surrounding the sore without adding that extra pressure directly to the area itself. Good luck and please let me know how she's doing!- Noelle's mommy, 3 years oldRochester NYCasted 8 times for 1 1/2 years and in first brace!reflux, mild plagiocephaly, mild torticollos, hypotonia, ligament laxity, suspected Ehler's Danlos III Subject: Cast questionsTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Saturday, November 14, 2009, 2:26 AM Hi guys. Guest guest
Drue is on day 6 with his cast on. His goes over the shoulders. Should he have the ability to look both ways, side to side, with the cast over his shoulders? He can to an extent, but seems to have trouble turning his head from side to side. Also, in between castings, or when casting is complete and you are in a brace, do the kids require physical therapy to build up neck and trunk muscles? and Jimmy Drue 13 months, first cast Tryston 4 years
Guest guest
Hi Peyton had trouble turning his head too. Well not really trouble, more like the cast shoulders just got in the way but he soon learned to compensate although he did have little bruises on his jaw line on each side for a short time. When it came time for the next cast I made sure to mention it to the doctor and he lowered the next one. Guest guest
, My son also has a little trouble turning his head and at first he couldnt (or wouldnt) at all!! Now he has adjusted to the straps and does a much better job but still doesnt have full range of motion. I thnk this is fairly normal and he will get used to it and will aclimate as best he can.
