I got back from camp at about 6 and did dinner with the big kid and hubby. I'm missing Miriam though and feeling mixed. She's at a new school with no one in her class she was friends with before. All the 5th graders in our district move from different elementary schools to one 5th and 6th grade building and she was hoping to be with some friends but she was put in the gifted program for the first time and none of her friends were so she's trying to get to know people. She does know a couple of kids from her old school but they are boys. She had to have a buddy for camp and the one girl she'd been getting to be friends with in her class chose someone else to be her buddy so Miriam was matched up with someone she barely knew. Anyway, she doesn't know anyone in her travel group or cabin either and was very clingy with me all day today. I got to know all the kids in the group and I thought they were all teriffic. One girl took a lot of interest in her and was buddying up to both of us so hopefully they will hang together the rest of camp. She really wanted me to stay tonight and through the rest of camp (I pick her up Wednesday at 11 AM) but I have to work and I truly think it is in her best interest to make the best of it and try to get to know the other kids more. If I were to have stayed she would never have done that. I remember working many years as a camp counselor myself and always told parents to give the kids a big hug and a promise to be back to get them at the end and then walk out the door without looking back. I always reassured them their kids would be fine within a few minutes and if they weren't we'd call them. I could reassure them because 99% of the time the kids did great as soon as the parents were gone. The kids who were not okay were always the ones whose parents extended the goodbyes and were hesitant to leave. I hugged her goodbye and left and then prayed all the way home that she'd be okay. I am continually trying to remind myself of that tonight. She seemed so vulnerable. I think she'll be okay, I sure hope so.

On a quick fitness note though... yes, we certainly walked a lot (not enough to burn off the crappy camp food though) but I also got a chance to participate in archery with the kids. I did better than a boy in the group that bow hunts deer!! I did archery at camp when I was a kid and have done it a couple of times since but that's it but I seem to be pretty natural with it. I hit the target with all 5 arrows I shot and one was dead in the middle. The counselor teaching it told me I was the best chaperone of the day (and ours was the last group of the day)! It was pretty cool!!

Did the w/u and c/d and the premix today. Very good stuff except the stretch definitely favored lower body without much for upper and it moved fast from exercise to exercise so I had to pause it a lot to write down weights or grab the right ones. I did some stretching after on my own. I want to do the whole workout again soon too. I'm off in a few minutes to chaperone at 5th grade camp with Miriam. She's staying there tonight and Tuesday, coming home Wednesday late morning. I'm helping out all day today so I'm sure to get more exercise in just hiking through the woods from one activity to another.

Thank you so much, Donna!! I know it is so important for her to go through it but I'm hating it too. I never had this with so it is weird being on the "other" side from where I'd always been. I had a very distracted, upset morning but Tuesdays are my busy day (4 classes, with 3 in a row in 3 different locations and the 4th in the evening after a dinner break at home) so that helped get my mind off things and I'm fine now. I think she must be too. I slept with the phone in my room just in case she was having such a rough time that they actually let her call home (which is very discouraged, it usually makes things MUCH worse) and of course, no call. So she must be okay. I'll pick her up at 11 tomorrow. Hopefully the weather will be good before that, she's scheduled to go canoeing before she comes home. Today was light rain off and on so I'm sure they were outside in it but it was probably okay, I hope so anyway or I'll be hearing about that too! ;-) Thanks again!!!

She's home now. We were both very happy to see each other as she came off the bus. I told DH last night that she'd come home one of two ways: either super chatty and excited or grumpy and sullen. There is no inbetween with the is kid. I was prepared for grumpy and sullen but she's been talking and excited ever since we got in the car (before that we were too busy looking for her luggage). I'm glad, really, really glad. I was hoping leaving her there to get off being dependent on me and start to bond with the other kids would work and it did. She started getting to know a couple of girls she didn't know well before and has all kinds of stories about all the fun she and they had. Phew. The rest of the school year should go better now too (with more friends to look for at school). Double phew. She got done chatting my head off for a while and is now busy getting reacquainted with some of the stuffed animals I wouldn't let her take (she wanted to take somewhere between 7 & 10 and we got her down to 4 small ones)! The teachers assured us our kids would want naps when they got home and her brother did but this one, not in the chatty, excited mode, no way! That's good though, I'm so relieved to see her this way.
