Once someone used circles to illustrate something to me which has

stayed with me ever since because it was so profound in its

simplicity.

He said we are all like circles (and drew images to illustrate). When

we meet other people, our circles partly overlap. To what degree

depends on how much we have in common.

With poeple who have tastes, views, values and experiences very

similar to our own, the overlapping bit can be bigger than the part

that's not overlapping. But with people who are very different from

ourselves, there may be only the tiniest sliver overlapping, or none

at all.

The more that overlaps, the easier for us to like, understand and

feel comfortable with the other person. But our respecive differences

also makes us interesting to each other since we will then have

something to learn from each other too.

So having much in common but not everything, sounds rather ideal.
