Guest guest
Before my hysterectomy I used to have a sweet tooth and eat everything in sight right before my period. But after my surgery in 2007 I don't crave sweets. I used to crave carbs like spaghetti when I drank a lot of diet coke but now that I don't drink as much I don't crave it. Yep, my body is strange! When is last day to weigh in at WW for Dr. Oz? Jen Subject: Re: Whey protein questionsTo: exercisevideos Date: Wednesday, October 26, 2011, 7:09 AM I don't know about any particular brand of whey protein but I can tell you this question came up in a WW publication very recently and the answer from there was that no, it doesn't help you lose weight any differently than any other kind of protein. The thing about any kind of protein is that it takes much longer for it than any other nutrient to be broken down and used by the body. Because of that, your hunger stays satisfied for a much longer time when you eat protein (again, any type) than any other food. Whey protein does not have an advantage over others in terms of hunger satisfaction. I think it is popular because it is so fast to mix up a protein drink as opposed to actually making a meal with protein (like chicken or beans), making it especially convenient for an after workout protein fix or when you just need something quick that will hold you for a long period of time. As long as you are not overriding your hunger signals by eating when you are not hungry, any kind of protein will add to feelings of satiety making it less likely you will physically need to eat anything for longer periods of time than when you eat other foods. Add in a complex carbohydrate (has fiber: like vegetables, fruit, whole grains) and you will have a super filling combination. The biggest problem is that so many of us do not pay attention to our body's signals of hunger, satisfaction and fullness and we eat when we don't really have a physical need to eat. That is when weight gain occurs because the body has no need for the food at that time so it store what it can't use as fat (for a time when it might need it, or so it thinks). Protein, in any form, keeps the body satisfied for longer but usually it is our mind that is the proble more so than hunger. Whey protein questions I watched the Dr. Oz show and one of his guests discussed the benefits of whey protein, does anyone here drink whey protein? Has it helped you to lose weight and/or fat? I wanted to add more protein to my diet because I heard it aids in weight loss. I bought Biochem Sports 100% Whey protein powder that I mix with water. It contains 20 grams of protein and has 110 calories....is this good? How often should I drink it?Thanks for your help, Jen

Guest guest
That's great to know what triggers your cravings at least, helps you stay more in control! Last day to weigh-in at WW for the Dr. Oz program is, I think, Feb. 26. I know it is late February but I might have the exact date wrong. He announces various dates from time to time on his show, to reignite interest and to give it some urgency (the dates are usually one week from the show's air date). We've been told though that we can weigh people for it anytime between when it was announced at the last day (prob. Feb. 26). Guest guest
Whey is a milk protein that is ranked the highest on the biological availability scale. The BA scale is kind of like the glycemic index in that it ranks how fast the body can use the protein. With the GI, a high number is bad because it means that it is in the blood stream faster raising blood sugar. With the BA scale for protein, a high number is good, because it means the muscles can use it for recovery faster then a slower digesting protein. So, whey is great for a post workout recovery drink to help repair and rebuild any muscle damage that is the natural process of exercise. By being available to repair and rebuild muscle so quickly, it helps in preventing some of it from being stored as fat if you consume it after workouts as opposed to before. Also, by assisting in muscle growth, it can help with fat loss, but the effect is small in comparison with effective cardio workouts. As for the brand, the big secret there is to find one you like the taste of because some of them taste nasty. If you like the taste and can mix with water, great. If not, you can try mixing with milk (skim preferably), juice, or frozen fruits in a blender. Personally, my favorite is with juice and a couple of frozen fruits to make a thick smoothie but if I'm in a rush or trying to do it at school, I'll use milk. In fact, I put a scoop of protein powder and a scoop of dry milk powder in my shaker cup in the mornings sometimes so that I can just add water when I'm out and about and in need of a quick snack without the ability to do much or any prep. Tonya I watched the Dr. Oz show and one of his guests discussed the benefits of whey protein, does anyone here drink whey protein? Has it helped you to lose weight and/or fat? Guest guest
I don't have a blender but this brand mixes easily. I've started drinking it with skim milk instead of water because it tastes better. I think when I don't have time for cereal in the morning or it's just to early to eat, I will have the protein drink. Otherwise I will drink it after a workout or for a snack. Thanks Tonya!
