Guest guest
I don't know about any particular brand of whey protein but I can tell you this question came up in a WW publication very recently and the answer from there was that no, it doesn't help you lose weight any differently than any other kind of protein. The thing about any kind of protein is that it takes much longer for it than any other nutrient to be broken down and used by the body. Because of that, your hunger stays satisfied for a much longer time when you eat protein (again, any type) than any other food. Whey protein does not have an advantage over others in terms of hunger satisfaction. I think it is popular because it is so fast to mix up a protein drink as opposed to actually making a meal with protein (like chicken or beans), making it especially convenient for an after workout protein fix or when you just need something quick that will hold you for a long period of time. As long as you are not overriding your hunger signals by eating when you are not hungry, any kind of protein will add to feelings of satiety making it less likely you will physically need to eat anything for longer periods of time than when you eat other foods. Add in a complex carbohydrate (has fiber: like vegetables, fruit, whole grains) and you will have a super filling combination. The biggest problem is that so many of us do not pay attention to our body's signals of hunger, satisfaction and fullness and we eat when we don't really have a physical need to eat. That is when weight gain occurs because the body has no need for the food at that time so it store what it can't use as fat (for a time when it might need it, or so it thinks). Protein, in any form, keeps the body satisfied for longer but usually it is our mind that is the proble more so than hunger. Whey protein questions I watched the Dr. Oz show and one of his guests discussed the benefits of whey protein, does anyone here drink whey protein? Has it helped you to lose weight and/or fat? I wanted to add more protein to my diet because I heard it aids in weight loss. I bought Biochem Sports 100% Whey protein powder that I mix with water. It contains 20 grams of protein and has 110 calories....is this good? How often should I drink it?Thanks for your help, Jen

Guest guest
So in a recent detox I did we used rice and pea protein from Thorne Reseach. The idea behind the detox was to check for various food sensitivities focusing on the big ones glutten, dairy, peanuts, eggs, and soy... since whey comes from dairy (or egg can't remember which) we used rice and pea protein. I will say I think I have a slight sensitivity to glutten and soy... when I gradually added those back I had sleep issues and some stomach issues.. nothing outrageous but it has me not consuming as much of thesejudyFrom: To: exercisevideos Sent: Wednesday, October 26, 2011 7:09 AMSubject: Re: Whey protein questions I don't know about any particular brand of whey protein but I can tell you this question came up in a WW publication very recently and the answer from there was that no, it doesn't help you lose weight any differently than any other kind of protein. Guest guest
Very interesting and I'm sure helpful to you. Have you kept a food diary? I know that is often recommended to help isolate cause/effect issues. (By the way, whey comes from dairy.) Guest guest
yes.. what we did is do 2 of these smoothies a day and one meal was lean meat and clean veggies.. snacks where veggies and 2 fruits (I used berries in my smoothing) then you gradually added food and wrote down issues with sleep, energy, digestion and poo... (they were obsessed with poo!)when I added dairy not too much of problem same with peanuts but glutten was a bit of digestive issue and some soys were a bit of an issue with sleep.. anyway.. I can never follow that strict of a program for long (why I still love WW!) but it did help me sort of get off my sugar cravings and cut back on bad carbs..(i.e. chips!)judyTo: exercisevideos Sent: Wednesday, October 26, 2011 2:01 PMSubject: Re: Whey protein questions Very interesting and I'm sure helpful to you. Guest guest
>does anyone here drink whey protein? hi jen! i meant to respond to your earlier question about what kind of whey protein to get, but im sorry, im just getting to it now. one thing ive learned is that some pro powders taste awful. but i have found that 'whey gourmet' has some great flavours. however, i eventually decided that i would just buy vanilla and make my own flavours. the premixed flavours are great if you just use a shaker cup with milk or water and go, but i like to blend in fruit and other stuff and make smoothies. now im using one called 'fitsmart' that has 20 grams of protein and 10 grams of fibre in two scoops. i buy vanilla and it is quite tasty. calories per serving are 160, but all of the fibre counteracts alot of that. there is no fat and little sugar (2 grams). i have learned from past experience that i have to start with just one scoop though, so i can be sure that my stomach can tolerate the whey. if im not careful i get bloating and gas, etc. ive been using one scoop for a while now, so i think i will try two and see how that goes. i also have to be careful not to chug the shake, but to drink it over 15-20 mins. if i drink it too fast, then i get stomach upset. so you might want to watch out and ease yourself into the full serving of the protein powder you have chosen. the best thing about this powder is that i can drink a shake before work and it will keep me full for a long time, and i have lots of energy during that time. i also like to drink it after i workout. while i add fruit, milk, emergen-c powder and cran-cherry powder to it, my kids mix it straight up with vanilla soy milk and often enjoy it for breakfast before school. > Has it helped you to lose weight and/or fat? yes, this powder has been very helpful to me in losing weight. it is a meal replacement and makes for a healthy, fast and flavourful drink. but also it is low calorie and low fat and the fibre and protein fill me up so much that i dont need (or want) to consume anything else. it is quite satisfying to me. > I bought Biochem Sports 100% Whey protein powder that I mix with > water. It contains 20 grams of protein and has 110 calories....is > this good? How often should I drink it? ive never had that brand so i dont know how it tastes. the 20 grams of pro is fabulous and the cal count is low. you might want to add some fibre to it though, for sticking power. i expect that you will want to use it for meal replacement while on the run for your job, which is a good idea. you can use it every day if you want, replacing one meal with it and eating two other sensible meals and snacks. or just use it when you need it -- on those days when you are too busy to eat or there are no healthy things around. maybe you can keep a shaker cup in your bag, along with some of the powder and a bottle of water. also throw in a high fibre fruit (like an apple). it is a good way to always have nutrition on hand. i hope that you like it and that these tips help. let us know! :*carolyn. Guest guest
I've noticed that if I go without eating for a long time I crave sweets, otherwise I don't have a sweet tooth. So I'm trying to eat every 3 or 4 hours to prevent that. I thought I read on here that Noel recommended to to eat more protein to build muscle. Muscle burns fat so it should help in my weight loss efforts. I'm still eating chicken and fish along with drinking a glass of skim milk mixed with whey protein.
Guest guest
Protein aids in muscle development (but doesn't do the job by itself, gotta do muscle-building exercises too, but I know you already know that). Too much protein though puts a burden on the kidneys (too much depends on your weight, possibly also height & gender but I can't remember). Interesting about craving sweets when you haven't eaten... most people, when they haven't eaten in many hours will eat anything and everything as fast as possible (which is the usual biggest problem with going too long without eating). I have a sweet tooth whether I last ate 7 hours ago or 7 minutes ago! ;-) Whey protein questions I watched the Dr. Oz show and one of his guests discussed the benefits of whey protein, does anyone here drink whey protein? Guest guest
I use myfitnesspal.com to keep track of my food. And when I add up all my calories, many times I'm under 1,200 for the day so I figure I can drink the protein drink in the morning (when I have an early job) and had breakfast when I get home. Or I can have the protein drink in the evening before bed. Today I tried it with 1/2 cup of skim milk and it tasted much better so I will stick to adding it to milk. I don't have a blender so I can't add in things and I'm not really crazy adding in things anyway. My breakfast of Fiber One cereal has plenty of fiber and helps to keep me regular. It's good to know that it may help me to lose weight...we'll see. I have to make sure I count calories and stick to around 1,300 like myfitnesspal.com suggests for me (unless I exercise then I can eat more.) Do you have your protein drink for breakfast everyday? Jen >does anyone here drink whey protein? hi jen! i meant to respond to your earlier question about what kind of whey protein to get, but im sorry, im just getting to it now. one thing ive learned is that some pro powders taste awful. but i have found that 'whey gourmet' has some great flavours. however, i eventually decided that i would just buy vanilla and make my own flavours. the premixed flavours are great if you just use a shaker cup with milk or water and go, but i like to blend in fruit and other stuff and make smoothies. now im using one called 'fitsmart' that has 20 grams of protein and 10 grams of fibre in two scoops. i buy vanilla and it is quite tasty. calories per serving are 160, but all of the fibre counteracts alot of that. there is no fat and little sugar (2 grams). i have learned from past experience that i have to start with just one scoop though, so i can be sure that my stomach can tolerate the whey. if im not careful i get bloating and gas, etc. ive been using one scoop for a while now, so i think i will try two and see how that goes. i also have to be careful not to chug the shake, but to drink it over 15-20 mins. if i drink it too fast, then i get stomach upset. so you might want to watch out and ease yourself into the full serving of the protein powder you have chosen. the best thing about this powder is that i can drink a shake before work and it will keep me full for a long time, and i have lots of energy during that time. i also like to drink it after i workout. while i add fruit, milk, emergen-c powder and cran-cherry powder to it, my kids mix it straight up with vanilla soy milk and often enjoy it for breakfast before school. :*carolyn. Guest guest
Before my hysterectomy I used to have a sweet tooth and eat everything in sight right before my period. But after my surgery in 2007 I don't crave sweets. I used to crave carbs like spaghetti when I drank a lot of diet coke but now that I don't drink as much I don't crave it. Yep, my body is strange! When is last day to weigh in at WW for Dr. Oz?
