can voices in your head be obsessive thoughts?

My 10 year old son has Tourette Syndrome, ADD, and anxiety that sometimes has

OCD manifestations. This last week, he " confessed " that he has been watching

" Adult Swim " cartoons in the evening on Cartoon Network. Adult Swim are

cartoons that are more violent, sexually-suggestive, and vulgar. He said that a

voice " tells " him to switch to the channel and watch it. It really troubled him

that he was doing this, which is where the confessing came in.

I am a little concerned about the " voice " . Could this be obsessive thought? Or

something more serious? He had an appt with his doc this week and I told her

about it. She told be to be vigilant about how this continues. One practical

action is that I am monitoring his TV more closely...LOL. And why does a

cartoon channel have to have such mature themes???!!!!! I thought that blocking

MTV, and some of those channels would help filter what my family is exposed

to....

Any input??

Thanks,

Teri, WA

Hi Terri,

Lee Baer, Ph.D., has written an excellent book entitled " The Imp of the Mind " .

His book explores obsessive bad thoughts and is available from most of

the major sellers online.

Your question deals with the difference between an obsessive thought

and schizophrenia or another psychotic disorder. Your son's doctor

will be able to discern the difference.

My son has suffered from obsessive bad thoughts, but since the

introduction of risperdal to his daily medication regimen this has not

been a problem.

Based on my understanding of obsessive bad thoughts, the fact that

your son is troubled by the thoughts and his response to them points

to inclusion of these thoughts as a symptom of OCD. If he were not

troubled by the thoughts or his response he would probably be

experiencing another problem.

Take care.
