Re: early onset hoarding?

Hi ,

Since your older daughter has an OCD dx, I would definitely keep that

in mind for the 3 yr old.

However, as the mom to 3 boys - my oldest is 19 and then I have twins

that are 15 (not identical and one twin has OCD), I would also keep

in mind how kids go thru many phases growing up and they are not all

alike as to phases.

My oldest used to scream and hold onto anything he could grab when I

would try to get him into the daycare building, cry he didn't want to

stay, etc. That was one period he went through. One of the twins

suddenly got separation anxiety around 6 or 7th grade(!) if I recall

that correctly. Lasted the whole year and drove me crazy, was like

my shadow. He'd had a bit of it back in elementary school also but

managed, then it seemed to get worse suddenly. You'd never know

today either one of those boys ever wanted to be around me at any

point in their lives! <wink>

As for the hoarding, again, kids go through phases, attachment to

things, upset about seemingly nothing (like throwing the penny or

something away). At some point next year, she might throw a handful

of pennies in the well! Still, I would work with her on this area

some, talk to her about it, etc. My OCDer was something of a hoarder

in elementary school, but not back at preschool age. He didn't like

throwing things away, even candy he said he was saving but would

never eat. My oldest didn't want me to get rid of a toy if he'd

outgrown it or was broken or he hadn't been playing with it, etc.,

when he was young. Is your daughter having trouble throwing

actual " trash " away??

So - I would work with the 3 yr old on issues but keep in mind how

changeable kids are from month to month, from now to 6 months later,

from year to year, etc. And actually you can " treat " many things as

if they were OCD, using the same techniques even if/when they

actually aren't. Such as being able to throw away things, flush the

toilet, etc.

Well, not much help, but with my 3 boys, we covered a lot between

them!

Thanks to everyone for their thoughtful responses to my questions

and my fears. We are considering a psychiatric evaluation for my 3

year old, yet waiting a week or so to see if the behaviors

continue. Interestingly enough, I took her to the pediatrician this

morning (one who is familiar at least with the word PANDAS) and he

found she had an ear infection. Her quick throat swab was negative

and they will culture it this weekend. Can an ear infection be

strep? My 5 year old does have PANDAS so we are curious if this

might explain the intensity and the onset of my 3 year olds

behaviors. We are basically holding our breath as the antibiotics

take hold and the week progresses. My husband and I feel like we

are clinging to our own sanity right now, our marriage was shaky

even before the first OCD dx in March. Life can feel so hard

sometimes. I am very grateful this list exists. I'll keep you

posted,

( My 3 year old began preschool two weeks ago and has new and

intense

separation anxiety. Meanwhile she has also begun to become

hysterical when she is asked to throw something away or flush the

toilet and asked to throw a penny into a wishing

well. So, fearfully I ask, does this also seem like OCD, maybe

early hoarding behavior/thought processes? or has anyone ever

experienced intense and generalized separation anxiety as separate

from OCD? )

Just to give you a bit of hope & a possibility, my son , now 15

and not by OCD-diagnosed child, exhibited extreme OCD behaviors

around that age also. Drove me crazy for 2-3-4 months, I was

thinking then I'd HAVE to see about him getting treatment. But the

behaviors faded away at some point. He's still a bit picky about

neatness, but nothing distressing or anxiety causing. I'll keep my

fingers crossed it works out this way for your 3 yr old!

What struck me most when I read your post was that your daughter just

began preschool two weeks ago and now she doesn't want to throw anything

away.... I couldn't help but think that maybe she thinks */she's/* being

" thrown away " when she's left at preschool. I'm not suggesting that she

stop going to preschool, but just thinking it could be part of the

separation anxiety.
