Mike and -- Is Carver going into Baptist Hospital Epilepsy Unit for

the video EEG on the 10th? Whitney is scheduled there on the 10th.

However, I am not sure, given the personal liability after insurance

coverage (we will be liable for $5,000.00 or so OVER insurance coverage) if

we will go ahead at this time. The hospital unit alone is $3,000.00 per day

and then there is the doctor, etc. on top of that. Baptist estimates the

hospitalization time to be 5 days but it could be as much as 10 days (which

would increase our personal liability to around $10,000.00). Also, I will

have to stay with her every minute of the entire hospitalization. The

bathroom is the only room that is not videotaped. She won't be able to take

a bath for the entire time because of the continuous EEG hook-up. Is this

the same situation you are facing?

Subject: Early Update

Happy New Year to everyone. Just a quick note to let everyone know what's

up next for Carver. We had a meeting with the

pediatric neurosurgeon last mon. in Winston-Salem for the VNS. Dr. Glazier

was very helpful and interested in helping Carver.

He listened to our concerns, answered our questions and fully explained the

course we were about to undertake. Carver has now

been taken off VPA because his liver enzymes have gone through the roof.

The next step with the VNS is a video EEG, which we

are scheduled for on the 10th of Jan. Dr. Glazier wants to determine if

Carver's seizures are multifocal or not. If they are multifocal

(as we believe), then VNS will be the ticket. If the seizures are focal,

then brain surgery will be the choice of treatment. Will keep

everyone up to date. Best wishes in the New Year.

Mike and

Carver Owen, 23 months with BPP in

Hickory, NC
