Hi ,I assume your son's cast has the mushroom shaped cut-out in the front. My daughter is a BIG barfer. At least a weekly occurrence, when she starts crying it typically ends with her vomitting. She even vomitted on the aide who was trying to 'petal' her cast after it was put on. Talk about starting with a dirty cast!!Your biggest issue is simply making sure they are over something or at least not vomiting down onto the cast. I would recommend having him wear a bib or another shirt, we typically can peel that off after she gets sick and the cast stays fairly clean. For us the cast hasn't limited her ability to vomit, which was something we worried about. The cast does make it difficult for our daughter to 'cough' stuff up, so we listen to her lungs daily when she has a cold.Liz, Mom to Keira 3.5 yrs in 5th cast in SLC---

My son, Ashton, received his first cast in Denver last week. Upon returning home from the airport, we picked up our other son from my parent's house. He had a fever for 3 days, and now he is throwing up.

I am so scared that Ashton will catch whatever virus his brother has. He's having a bit of a hard time adjusting to the cast anyway, but I can't imagine how uncomfortable he will be if he throws up and isn't able to move his torso, not to mention if he gets vomit on the cast.

Has anyone had to deal with this? What should I do if he gets sick?

Thanks,

,I never had to deal with the throwing up, but the night of 's 1st cast application, he finally came down with a viral infection his brother had had days before. SO his first cast he was running close to 105 fever and there was nothing we could do. It was just a viral infection and had to run its course. Baby Motrin was all we could do.I comforted him and stayed close watching every move he made. Once your son gets over this it will take him some time, but he will adjust to the cast.In the mean time I would keep a close eye on him.I am a little behind on posts, but wanted to find out if he has a nice size tummy cutout. ,

If he does get sick and you think hes going to vomit i would put a big oversized plastic bib on him. You can get ones that are big enough to cover most if not all of the tummy cutout. I would keep this on him the whole time that way if he does vomit it will not go down or on the cast. I know this may sound gross but they make big plastic bibs with a "crumb catcher" which is like a pocket at the bottom of the bib and this could catch the vomit.

Hope he doesnt get it!

I've noticed on some of the pics of other casts that they're not covered like we cover Nora's. When they trim hers up after they apply the moleskin they put a wrap around it so the sweater only shows over her tummy. The last cast they offered to cut the sweater out over her tummy so she would be cooler, but I declined, maybe next go round. The hospital uses a medical wrap but when we want to change it we go to southern states or tractor suppy to get them. You can ask for bandaging tape. They use it mostly on horses. This way if he happens to get sick you can simply change the wrap and it covers most of the sweater.

, Good luck and I hope your child does not get sick. We have not dealt with vomit, but did diarrhea. It was rather hard to get it out of her cast since it went up it. If I were you, I would keep a waterproof bib on him if she does get it and keep him clothed and not just in his cast. Though, if he gets a fever, you want to strip him down so I dont know how youd do that. FYI: If he does get a fever, being in the cast, it will probably be higher than normal. At least from our experiences it has been. We have finally realized when my daughter gets a fever, it is much higher bc of her cast, which is why I hate fevers and try to keep her away from any sickness with one bc it scares me how high it gets. We realized this when we had to take her to the children's hospital ER bc of a fever of 104. They couldnt find anything wrong. Actually they were

talking about doing surgery on her stomach bc when they xrayed her, a bubble showed up in her stomach and they thought it was an air bubble. I was like, WHAT?! They were going to have to do emergency surgery. Then they realized the bubble was from the hole in her back of her cast! FREAKY! But anyways, the next day we took her to her ped and turns out she had a start of a ear infection and her fever was just exaggerated bc of her cast. That is why I think fevers are more dangerous for kids in casts, at least for my daughter. Just thought id let you know if he does get a fever and it goes really high, that would be why. Keep him cool and put a cool rag on his head, it helps! But hopefully he doesnt get it!ShaunaFrom: erinfilipiak
