Guest guest
Robin, I am in the Clear Lake area and I saw a GP here, today...and she's given me a name of a thyroid specialist in Houston. I will send it to you in a few minutes, after I go downstairs and get the name out of my purse. This GP tested me for FREE T3 and T4 today, and is talking about switching me to Armour! This was all her idea! I've never found anyone who was willing to even test "free" levels, much less consider Armour. I'm very excited that I might finally get some relief from my fatigue problems that have been plaguing me this year. doctors on west side of Houston Hi all,I'm trying to get my 26-year old niece, whose medical history and symptoms have pretty much mirrored mine (I have Hashimoto's and human growth hormone deficiency) in to see a doctor somewhere on the west side of Houston, who will hopefully actual check the things that need to be checked. Does anyone know of someone who would be worth taking her to see?She is on limited income, Medicaid, so if you know of anyone that accepts it and is still a responsive, listening doctor, I would appreciate the name. If I can't find someone who takes Medicaid, we will try the best possible one we can find and try to deal with the money some other way. She lives to the west of Houston but could drive in as far as the 610 loop.I don't want to see her go the extra 20 years that I did before I found out what is wrong. I don't know whether an endocrinologists would be the best start or if I should try an internal medicine doc (there is one on the list in Katy--Dr. Gibbs, I think). Thanks for any help anyone can give me.Robin Schumacher
Guest guest
The endocrinologist I am going to see is near the Astrodome, on Fannin at Old Spanish Trail. His name is Dr. Petak. I'm just excited to find someone who believes in testing Free T3 and Free T4...my current Endo, Dr. Arem, does not. I don't think he prescribes Armour, either...and I get to switch, now! doctors on west side of Houston Hi all,I'm trying to get my 26-year old niece, whose medical history and symptoms have pretty much mirrored mine (I have Hashimoto's and human growth hormone deficiency) in to see a doctor somewhere on the west side of Houston, who will hopefully actual check the things that need to be checked. Guest guest
Arem does prescribe Armour for his patients who prefer it over Cytomel. I removed both him and Petak from our list because they keep many patients undermedicated due to over reliance on TSH. We have two Petak casualties currently active on our board. . . ." Guest guest
I've heard good things about Petak, but I've also heard he's a numbers man when it gets down to the dosing with Armour. Guest guest
, I am currently seeing Dr. Petak. My question to you is, why do you want to see an endo? Has your GP told you that she can't handle your conditions? To me it sounds like she has what it takes to do the job. For starters, she uses Armour. That's a huge step in the right direction. THEN, she said that she has prescribed Armour to others to make them feel better. I can tell you in a personal email my opinions of Dr. Petak. If you are interested you may email me personally. There is another person who just " fired " him. I am sure she could really light things up! Guest guest
Well, I will say this about Dr. Arem....I saw him two weeks ago, and asked for Free T3 and Free T4 testing and he said it's too expensive and doesn't really tell him anything. He can tell all he needs to know by the bloodwork he does. Not that they gave me the levels, but about three months ago they did: T3=31.9 T4=8.8 TSH=4.7 Re: doctors on west side of Houston Arem does prescribe Armour for his patients who prefer it over Cytomel. I removed both him and Petak from our list because they keep many patients undermedicated due to over reliance on TSH. We have two Petak casualties currently active on our board. . . ." Guest guest
One more thing about Dr. Arem. I told him I've gained nine pounds recently (up to 140, now). He flipped my chart over, looked at my basic info, and said dismissively, "It's your age." Period, end of discussion. Just like I told him I'm still unbelievable tired every afternoon, but he said my levels are almost perfect, and I don't need to see him but twice a year now. Who cares if I'm tired. Guess life ends at age 41? Re: doctors on west side of Houston Arem does prescribe Armour for his patients who prefer it over Cytomel. Guest guest
If your GP is prescribing you Armour and working with you, why are you going to see an endo, may I ask? I'd stick with the GP, for that alone. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, so to speak. If he doesn't know what's going on then he just buries his head in the sand and says it doesn't exist. Pooofff!! Now ya see it, now ya don't. I knew he wouldn't treat a TSH below 1, but now THIS. This is why I'm self treating, proudly. The 10 faces of Dr. Know. Guest guest
Hi, I am new to the group. I am in Houston. I was diagnosed Hypo in 2001, and have been on Synthroid ever since. I am seeing the Endo Dr. Wiedman in the same group as Dr. Petak, at TIMRE. I thought it was supposed to be a good group after the article in March 12, 2002 Woman's Day. Before that I was going to Dr. Orzeck. They are all about the numbers. I feel worse than ever, I think in am developing Fibromyalgia, my weight is higher than ever, too. I just want to find a good Dr. I was thinking about Dr. Arem, but from what I see here, he is no different. I also have PCOS and Endometriosis, plus depression/anxiety. Any suggestions? My Psychiatrist's PA gave me the name of a Neuro-Gastrointerologist that works closely with PCOS and Endometriosis, Dr. Mathias. He seems like he looks at the whole picture...I am seriously considering taking this route. Anyone know about him? I had some releif from doing acupuncture, and actually wound up preggers last year. I just can't afford someone that my insurance doesn't take so now even the acupuncture is out. I am a stay at home mommy now, so we are on a limited budget.
