We need a follow up MRI early in 2010 and we plan to have the cast removed right before, than have the cast put back on within a day or 2. My understanding is no- for our style of cast. Anyone else? Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 4th cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 21)

Does anyone know whether a Spinal MRI can be done while a child is casted? My daughter had her chiari malformation decompression surgery this week, she is home recovering now and docs say surgery was a success however she needs a repeat MRI in 3 months. I just don't want to wait for casting any longer than necessary as she is already 2 years old.Kim

Sorry I guess my messages have not been posting again.  I hope this goes through this time.  Cole has had his MRI done in cast.  There was absolutely no problem at all.  As long as there is no metal in the cast, which there shouldn't be, you CAN get an MRI done in cast.

Hi Jenn,Doesn't your cast have staples that hold down the padding? Ours do and they show up in the xray. But maybe they are made of a material that won't interfere with the MRI?Liz, Mom to Keira - 3.5 yrs in 5th cast in SLCSubject: Re: Spinal MRI while wearing cast? To: infantile_scoliosis Date: Monday, November 16, 2009, 7:13 PM

Our cast does not have metal staples holding down the padding.  It would be something to ask if you needed to get an MRI in cast.  I talked to our orthopedic and he said it was fine and then when we went to get the MRI done they used a metal detecting wand all over the cast to make sure it was ok.

Our casts have staples, I got the impression we'd have to have it off to do the MRI. We'll discuss this when we're back there in Dec. with our Doc. Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 4th cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 21)

I am not aware of ish Rite using staples. I would think some time over 14 months during 's casting I would have noticed. Or they would have told us. If they were using them they were very well hidden. We go to SLC and they use a staple gun to attach the padding that they have pulled out of the cast around the cut-out areas. They actually got the staple gun out and stapled a section of my daughter's padding the day after it was put on. They are visible in the xray, if you look at the xray, you could tell if you had staples. Liz, Mom to Keira - 3.5 yrs in 5th cast in SLC

Sorry I guess my messages have not been posting again. I hope this goes through this time. Cole has had his MRI done in cast. There was absolutely no problem at all. As long as there is no metal in the cast, which there shouldn't be, you CAN get an MRI done in cast.

Yep, on our casts, they are very visible unless covered with petals/moleskin. As Nick said to me, I'm not gonna ask our Team Bex at SLC to do anything differently- we are extremely happy with them!
