Guest guest
I called 10 different doctors offices. I explained how Cole was at increased risk because he is in the hospital every 8 weeks for a procedures in the OR and therefore is at increased risk of contracting H1N1 and at a huge risk of giving it to other very sick kids in the OR if he gets it and we don't know, and that if he got it then they could have to postpone treatment. I also mentioned that in his cast he retains additional body heat and therefore when he gets sick it is more serious. Ok so I made things seem more serious then they actually are but it worked and I eventually got a different doctor who had the shot to give it to Cole, but I am seriously worried about his health. Guest guest
I just vaccinated Hayden on Monday for H1N1 b/c he is high risk with his heart defect. I totally understand your concerns. An airplane is a germ breader. I know you have no choice b/c you have to take your child to the Hosp for a cast, but I would maybe boost their immune system starting NOW with probiotics and vitamin C. I am sure there are some other parents on here that can offer advice on what else to give to boost immunity. I do the probiotic thing quite a bit and it does help. So sorry you have to deal with all this. Good luck and I will pray that you and your family stay healthy this winter. Guest guest
, I am worried about this also. Our town hasnt even had the regular flu shot in stock. I just found out that our doctors office will have that in on Monday when we go for Isaiah's well baby check on Monday. He has only been sick once in his life. Hes 14 mos old. I talked to a doctor that works in family practice and she expressed that he should be on the priority list for the H1 N1 shot due to his medical conditions. Unfortunately there are no shots available in our town and the neighboring town is only giving it to healthcare workers and pregnant women. I also heard with children it is only 100% effective after 2 does 3 weeks apart. Our next cast date is this month so i guess we will just have to take our chances since it will not be available until after that. I hope your child doesnt get sick. Guest guest
Thanks. I'm thinking maybe we'll all wear masks for the flights and while we're at the hospital. Neither child will be going into a cast (1 brace for Noah and hopefully nothing for Mariella) but we will be at Shriners for at least 3 days. I don't think there's much I can give Mari in regards to probiotics or vitamin C - she just started on some finger foods but isn't able to have orange juice or anything yet due to her age. I think she can have yogart now - so I'm check into that. Guest guest
Good for you! Neither of my kiddos will be going under in the OR this time though. So I'd be streching the truth too much if I said that. I thought about making a phone call to their ped though (last time I just spoke with a nurse.) Our ped understands all that we've gone through to get my kids proper treatment and might pull some strings...but again, I don't want to take away from the kids that are at even higher risk. I'll have to put some more thought into this I guess.
Thanks for your help!~Noah 4 years old9 months of casting in SLC; Currently on 1 1/2 years of bracingAnd Mariella 9 months old currently waiting and watching at 11* To: infantile_scoliosis From: jennifer.leggett@...Date: Wed, 4 Nov 2009 14:49:02 +0000Subject: Re: Traveling concerns H1N1 I called 10 different doctors offices. Guest guest
I probably would not give it to Hayden either if he wasn't at risk b/c of his heart condition. When a child has a heart defect like his, they can go into congestive heart failure if they get upper respitory infections. I totally understand that there is not enough research on this vaccine, but I had to weigh the pros and cons, and if Hayden got sick I may have to put him in the hospital and the first thing they would do is cut that cast off. So I just hope and pray that the vaccine doesn't give him any adverse reaction. So far he is totally fine and playing and happy, so I just have to move on and hope for the best. I don't want to get into a whole debate about vacinations, but I'm curious to find out if anyone who does vacinate but hasn't been able to get a H1N1 vacine for their child is concerned. Our ped office has only received 6 doses of the H1N1 vaccine - 6! I spoke to the nurse yesterday and expressed my concern that my 10 mo old and 4 year old will be traveling by plane later this month and will be staying in a children's hospital. I asked if I could get them on the "priority list" for the vaccine. (Once they receive the vaccine in our area the first "wave" will only be given to children on the priority list.) She said "no." The priority list is only for kids with cancer, heart conditions, asthma, etc. I can't argue with that - I agree those kiddos should come first. I am scared to death (mainly for my daughter who has never been sick a day in her life) to travel without this vaccine. Am I being irrational? Anyone else worried about our kids that travel and stay in hospitals?~Noah 4 years old9 months of casting in SLC; Currently on 1 1/2 years of bracingAnd Mariella 9 months old currently waiting and watching at 11* Bing brings you maps, menus, and reviews organized in one place. Guest guest
Popular or not - you're entitled and you're certainly not alone : ) As parents we all do what we feel is best for our children. Guest guest
Thanks Tasha. Before I had Hayden I NEVER gave myself or Hayle any kind of flu shot. I never believed in them. But life has taken a turn for us. Oh well. Glad we can all discuss this on this group. It's nice to have you all to listen to and talk to. Although I still feel there is not enough info out there about it, I do feel a child with underlying conditions could very well be at a higher risk. Glad he was able to get it.
