Guest guest
I thought I'd add on to Tasha's post about some dr's letting the child be out for a week or so between casts. Usually it was bc/the family lived out of state so the dr let them have the cast taken off in their hometown and then go for the next cast a week or so later. You could always check with your Dr to see if he'd allow that for . If so, that would give her a week this summer to swim and play in the sand with her brothers. I guess it depends on the child and or the age of the child. I think it is GREAT for the child though, but can be confusing. If it were me I would keep it on regardless of seasons. It goes so fast and I would just want to get it ALL over with!! never had the opportunity for a summer break. We went through 2 summers while in a cast. He did though have a few times when the cast was those taken off and got a cast-free day. That was the best we got. And very thankful for those days. Each doctor is different from what I read here. Some have no problem the cast being off a week and others apply the new one minutes after the old one is taken off.In all of this I always tried to go with my gut. Is 's doctor giving you the option of it being off for summer? Guest guest
This is multi factorial….It really depends on the childs age, degree of curvature(s), rotational phase, etc…….IMHO, this is a fabulous example of why going to a ET/Mehta trained doc is essential. A doc with experience in Mehtas ET principles would know what to take into account before taking the chance that the series of EDF jackets were removed prematurely…. Liv had summer breaks because she never had the chance to be treated early and couldn’t live her entire childhood in casts. IMO, if the child is still in the rapid phase of growth, the curves aren’t below the 20’s, and rotation isn’t completely gone….I wouldn’t take a break unless absolutely necessary.. At least for us and I'd prefer it to be that way because we wouldn't want to lose any time or correction. I wouldn't recommend long breaks, but thats me! Shauna Mother of Hadley(2 1/2 years). Hadley started with a 74 degree curve and 8 casts later is down to 12 degrees and is now in her first brace. *With God, all things are possible* Mathew 19:26 Subject: Summer break from casts To: infantile_scoliosis Date: Saturday, March 6, 2010, 10:39 AM What is your experience/knowledg e is as far as getting time out of the cast for the summer? 1) How many weeks do the docs usually allow the child to be cast-free? 2) Does the child need to be in a brace during this time?
