Guest guest
Patty, I think 6 degrees is great correction!!!! We go for a cast change Friday and ill take 3 if i can get it but of course would love to see more. Please dont be discouraged. 6 sounds great to me!!! Subject: Isabella's 3rd castTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Tuesday, November 17, 2009, 11:13 PM We got back Friday night from Isabella's 3rd casting and it's just been crazy the last couple of days, so for those of you that didn't see this on facebook, we didn't get much correction. I know that it's more accurate having the curve measured while standing but I was glad to have this one done laying down because last time Isabella was fighting like crazy and we didn't know how accurate the x-rays were. She started at 64 degrees laying down on July 1st (which means she was probably worse) and in September went to 44 out of cast and this time we got 6 degrees, down to 38, out of cast. I guess any correction is good correction. I'm just worried that next time it will be even less or nothing. Guest guest
Patty, you notice how I don't put 's correction number in my closing thing, that is because I am not very pleased with it either. He went from 60 to 52 in the first cast, which is nothing compared to other kids his age, then with the second he got down to 35. I know that is good, but if you compare that to the kids that are going from 60 to 25 in two casts, that does not look that good. It is hard when it is all about the numbers. I am trying to focus on the fact that I got him in with plenty of time before he was two, and he has good muscle tone and all the things that people say make for good cast correction, so i just have to put it in God's hands, he knows the best thing to do, and what is right for and our family. Wow, that is hard to write, easy to say, but extremely difficult to really do. God is ultimately in charge and will do what is best for us even if we don't see it at the time. I will be praying for Isabella and her correction.Beth Rettinger Mother Of In Second Cast From SLCSubject: Isabella's 3rd castTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Wednesday, November 18, 2009, 12:13 AM We got back Friday night from Isabella's 3rd casting and it's just been crazy the last couple of days, so for those of you that didn't see this on facebook, we didn't get much correction. Guest guest
Patty, 6 degrees is great correction! You have to remember that every child and case is different. Some children have more flexible spines than others and that's why they see more correction. The key is that you are seeing correction and that you caught it early enough so that Isabella could get treatment. She may have to be in a few more casts than others, but it'll be worth it in the long run. Just keep doing what you're doing, you're a wonderful mom who cares deeply about her child and you're helping her fight this strongly. You'll hit a big growth spurt in a cast and correction will be even better. Just hang in there and know that we're all here to talk or listen if you need it. Guest guest
Sorry if this posts twice. I don't think it went through an hour ago when I tried.  Anyways... Congratulations.  It is very normal in the beginning to do laying downe.  If you are getting correction laying down then you are getting it standing up too.  Also 6 degrees after the first casting is fantastic in my opinion.  It does start to drastically slow down after that first cast is my understanding.  I wouldn't worry that you will stop correcting.  We got 24 degrees in his first cast (we caught a great growth spurt) and got 5 in the second and the doctors was really really happy.  Also from what I understand from the Rochester doctors is that they go into a brace based on laying down measurements not standing up ones.  Mehta did laying down xrays too is my understanding and that is how the doctors are able all their patients in their studies, so the studies are based on laying down numbers not the standing up ones.  Thats just my understanding from conversations with the doctor. Congratulations on your correction.  Jenn Mommy to Cole, 22 months, 3rd cast from Rochester, 18 degrees out of cast down from 46, chiari maliformaion
Guest guest
Thanks! I believe we may see the same doc but he was happy with the correction. I don't know if I sounded unhappy with the laying down xrays but I wasn't. I preferred laying down because she was such a bear getting xrays before in the standing position. Isabella seems to be on track with Cole. She got 20 the 1st cast and then 6 this time. Guest guest
It did go through the first time. Guest guest
I agree that 6 degrees is great! Our number of 21 in cast 4 is "in cast"- so surely our number would be higher out of cast. I see other parents post here with much bigger leaps than we've had- even in one or 2 casts- so I can relate to how you're feeling- and Beth, as well. I'm pretty sure we've had growth spurts after age 2, so I am still very hopeful. Hang in there! 2 is not the end of the road at all, they are still growing. Guest guest
Patty so happy to hear you got some correction! Correction is correction, right? Isabella is only on cast3 so you have some time to get those numbers down a bit, but just think about where you started and how far Isabella has come....this is great news! Dont worry, everyday day that goes by and shes in a cast, her little spine is learning to grow straighter and straighter(: Dianna (mommy to Marcela, 18 mos. in 3rd cast) > > > >From: Patty Bowen <bowenpattyyahoo (DOT) com> > >Subject: [infantile_scoliosi s] Isabella's 3rd cast > >To: infantile_scoliosis @yahoogroups. com > >Date: Wednesday, November 18, 2009, 12:13 AM > > > > > >> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >> > > > >We got back Friday night from Isabella's 3rd casting and it's just been crazy the last couple of days, so for those of you that didn't see this on facebook, we didn't get much correction.
