My husband, Jimmy, and I are new to the group and the whole infantile scoliosis conditions. It went like most of your stories, from "let's watch it" to "We have to cast NOW". At 10 months, Drue's spine was at 36 degrees with ribs at 14. Things looked good for correction. Three months later, he is at 39 with ribs up to 35. We go for our first cast on the 22nd. I know my dr. is wonderful, I've talked to others that have dealt with him. I am just nervous about the casting, how Drue will adjust, diaper changing, more than there is room to mention here. If anyone has any suggestions about anything, pertaining to treatment, care, adjustments Drue will have to make next week, we'd love any feedback. I have learned so much over the weekend that I didn't know by finding ISOP. I have read tons of articles, tips, and stories that have helped me greatly, but you know the fears that we have even having some knowledge. I know this has to be done now and this is the best thing we can do for baby Drue, a minor bump in the road compared to probably numerous broken bones that two brothers will encounter. I am so happy I am part of this group. I've already spoken with one mom that has given me her time to answer some of my questions. She was a blessing to me last night, answering my contiuous questions. She encouraged me to post as soon as possible, so....here we are! Guest guest
Hi Welcome to CAST. I know it is so scary thinking that your precious child will have to endure this awful looking cast, but I promise they adjust so quickly and they will amaze you. Yes, it is hard at times b/c you can't bathe them and they can't swim and sometimes they may be itchy or the diaper may leak, but all that is worth it especially if it will cure your child's scoli. Ask any questions, we are here to help eachother and help you get through this first cast. If you have already talked to Tasha, then you already have talked to someone who has so much knowledge and wisdom and great advice. All the parents on here are so supportive and helpful and honest. Cast life will be so much easier knowing that you are NOT alone. Keep us posted on Drue's first cast. Guest guest
Welcome ! You are making such a wonderful choice for your son. The first week will be a hard adjustment, but soon after you will be amazed at how he will adjust to cast life. It seems it is so much harder on us then it is on them, children are amazing!. I recommend getting some Poise pads for the diapering and adding the pad across the top inside seam of the diaper. This helps with leaks at nighttime. Also, if you have a beanbag for sitting or putting toys at reach from a kneeling position helps in the first week. I dont know if your son walks yet, but my son learned to walk after being casted, in fact I think it helped him with his balance. My son Evan started at 49 degrees and is now at 0, so keep the faith that this treatment truly is a blessing and it works. If you need anything, please dont hesitate to reach me at . Guest guest
Thank you! As the days pass, I am getting more nervous, normal, I know. We are taking looonnnng baths each night and running all over the place. Drue has been walking since 9 months, so I am hoping that is going to help him adjust. He also is used to chasing his four year old brother around, so I think that'll give him some incentive to get up and go! I am worried now because yesterday he started getting a snotty nose. I am a teacher and we are going to be on break for two weeks, I REALLY don't want to put off the casting the 22nd. So now I am praying his nose clears up, and this doesn't postpone things. Thanks for your support. Oh, and I hope you are having a great holiday season! and JimmyMommy and daddy to Tryston, 4, Drue, 13 monthsDrue's first cast Dec. 22St. Louis Children's Hospital Subject: Re: Introducing you to DrueTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Thursday, December 17, 2009, 8:07 PM , I just wanted to say welcome to CAST! I'm sure many others have responded (I"m 2 days behind on posts) so I won't say much until I read the other posts and add anything if needed. I will say that I really can't tell you what an adjustment it will be since your child is so much younger than mine. Some of the younger kids have problems learning to do things again but my daughter was already walking so she wasn't affected too much by the cast. She was a bit top heavy at first. Everyone on here has different stories on how things went but I will say that, for us, things have been pretty easy to adjust to. Our biggest issue was the diapering, but once someone explained the easiest way to do it, there wasn't a problem... it's just annoying. The only other thing is not being able to bathe her but we've gotten used to that too. I wanted to wish you luck on the 22nd and if I can be of any help, let me know. Just know, we are all here for you!!! Thank you in advance for any advice, encouragement you have to offer! , mommy to Drue, 13 months, 1st brace Dec.
Guest guest
Keep an eye on his congestion, maybe use a humidifier at night and some saline spray in his nose, that helps a little bit. Also check his temp as well. They won't do the casting if he has chest congestion or a fever. Good luck. Everything will be fine. Your child will amaze you.. Guest guest
OH NO!!!! He can't be sick....he can't be sick. Just keep telling yourself that over and over. I pray he is not so you will have that break with him to adjust to the cast.To answer one of your questions in an email......I did go up a diaper size at one point. Some do some don't. You just have to be careful that it could backfire on you if he really needs a bigger diaper to fill up. Does he still drink a bottle before bedtime? I had to really start watching what had to drink before bed. Keep us posted on how he is.......praying right now that he is still good to go on the 22nd!
